I think art is about the freedom to embrace oneself, the joy of sharing love, and maybe....just maybe, leaving the world a little better than it was before :)
I've been away for a while juggling my new work schedule at the outpatient clinic and art therapy practice. The work is so meaningful, and I'm grateful for the trust my clients place in me. I've been pouring a lot of my creative energy into their care, and I find that the remaining energy I have is naturally gravitating towards doing studies.
Here's a recent piece I did of one of Van Gogh's paintings. Do you have any favorite artists you like to study?
In the time I have been away, I have studied and completed a Masters in art therapy. I’ve worked with children and their families at the hospital, learning and applying how to use art as a way to support healing. As I continue to the next stages of clinical work, I feel so SO excited to restart my artwork. I feel like a bamboo plant building and building underground all these months ready to shoot up! I can not wait to share all the new knowledge and skills I have gained with you all.
Just finished my first year of graduate school 🙂 Finally dusting off all the video footage I meant to edit and pulling out my paints to do larger watercolor paintings. Excited to fill you folks in on what I have been up to! How have you been?
Also included are beginners' recommendations for a few supplies to get. I flagged some good quality items that won't break your bank or break after first-time use 🙁
For convenience, I have also flagged all these items on amazon: www.amazon.ca/shop/cocobeeart This includes some gear I use too. I hope it's helpful!
Happy New Year my friends! I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your support and kindness this year. Thank you also for your patience while I lay dormant from social media in exchange for time to study. I really love being in school and I am eager to share with you what I am learning. The world of art therapy and psychotherapy is fascinating. As I begin to work on videos and paintings again, I am sure bits and pieces of these ideas will emerge. For now, I hope you are having a safe and happy holiday. Sending you a big warm hug! ~ coco bee
Graduate school has been a whirlwind. Every hour is squeezed out each day for class, writing papers, reading, sneaking in a snack here and there. I’ve been feeling very grateful to have a chance to study especially in a time like this and in a subject so niche. Art therapy has opened my eyes to a different kind of art making and so many kinds of suffering. It's a strength base approach that really resonates with me. I like that we get to ask, “what can this person do?” and not “what problems do they have”. I like that it questions the status quo of medicine and looks deeper into the person. So this is what I have been up to. Away in a cocoon, studying the daylight away. I have not been able to paint or create video as often as I like but I have not forgotten. I will share more as I can. In the mean time, thank you for your patience. I hope you have all been well and safe. ~ Coco Bee
Getting ready to trek a new Everest. I’ll be hitting the books and starting grad school again in September. The scientist in me is excited to dig my nose deep into psychotherapy, philosophy, and how to use art to help others heal. It’s a departure from the once step-by-step medical school life I had originally planned for myself but I’ve come to understand that medicine takes many forms. And my form of practice may look more like expression of shapes and colors rather than pills. The trepidation is in walking where very few have walked before but I have hope in my pocket and faith that good things will happen by staying true to oneself. . Back from a trip to the forests for some much needed fresh air and space. I found my circadian rhythm quickly adjusted to nature’s clock. 5am sunrises with the dawn chorus and early night times to the buzzing of bugs and fireflies. Being close Mother Earth always helps me reground and readjust things back to balance. The peaceful surroundings help me loosen up when I’ve been too anxious and uptight. It’s also a reminder to be grateful about modern day conveniences like clean running water in a bathroom, refrigerator to keep food cold, a cushy warm bed to fall into. And the fact that it’s often the simplest things that can bring about the greatest memories and contentment in life. Rejuvenated and excited to start creating artwork again. ~Coco Bee
Every day there seems to be more and more saddening news. Despite the optimism and hope I still have for the future, it’s hard to not feel overwhelmed and anxious as each day passes with more uncertainty. Painting has always given me solace during hard times. With that spirit in mind, I like to restart #cocobeecolorplay challenge on IG and FB. I’ll be painting color combo prompts decided by all of us. 7 days of water + colours to give us a little space and peace during these challenging times. Paint whatever you like, paint through all (or some) of the color combos, in or out of order. The key is to get the brush out onto the page :)
Hope you have all been safe and healthy my friends, Coco
