This is Arefa, a nine-year-old Rohingya girl. Her father was killed by the Myanmar military in northern Arakan State, in Suah Pying village, Rathedaung area.
Arefa uses crutches. She was shot in the leg by the military.
With the ICJ hearings resuming, we thank The Gambia and the states that have joined the case to hold Myanmar accountable for crimes against the Rohingya.

On this historic 4th of January, Myanmar’s Independence Day, we, the Rohingya, remember the day with mixed emotions. While this independence is a milestone for Myanmar, it has long remained out of reach for our own freedom and dignity.
Standing in solidarity with the people of Myanmar, we acknowledge the value of independence and the sacrifices behind it.
Yet we must speak the truth: true independence begins only when the Rohingya are free, when our rights are recognized, our identity respected, and our safety guaranteed.
Despite decades of exclusion, displacement, and injustice, we choose to mark this day with hope rather than hatred. Our commitment remains justice, peaceful coexistence, and an inclusive Myanmar where no community is left behind.
On this 4th of January, we reaffirm our call for genuine freedom, equality, and human rights for all, because independence without the Rohingya is incomplete.

Rohingya History of Arakan, Myanmar (1992)
At 2017, the world watched as hundreds of thousands of Rohingya crossed the border into Bangladesh.
This image captures both the literal and symbolic weight carried by those fleeing for their lives.
With nothing but the clothes on his back and his children balanced in baskets, this father shows the lengths a parent will go to protect their family.
Years have passed since that journey began, yet the resilience of the Rohingya people remains a powerful testament to the human spirit.

Portrait: Photo.
My name is Sirajul Begum.
I am 95 years old.
I am a resident of the Ukhiya Police Station area.
Alhamdulillah, I am still healthy and confident.
Today, in 2026, this photo is being used for awareness and advertising purposes.
I, Abul Kalam, kindly ask everyone to pray for this elderly woman so that she may continue to live in good health.
She is Bangladeshi, not Rohingya.
