I am sorry to report that Lizzie, the Demon Beagle, has peacefully crossed over at the impressive age of 18.
She had been declining steadily for about a week. Yesterday afternoon, we had her wrapped in a fleece blanket in her cushy bed next to my chair. I patted her on the head and sat down, and when I glanced down a minute or two later, she had gone.
We are all grateful that she wasn't in any pain, and that she is no longer suffering the loss of her sight and hearing.
We buried her with flurries in the air, in my grandparents' Narnia-like grove of past Christmas trees, wrapped in her blanket, with some (freakishly) late blooming lilacs under her nose, and a little cherub for a marker.
Also, I am fairly certain I've already seen her. As we were returning the shovels to the potting shed, I could swear I saw a small animal run inside. I assumed it was Kat-cat, Lizzie's bestie and our only outside cat, who is a tortie and similar in size and color, but when I called for her to come out so I could latch the door, she was fifteen feet away on the back porch. It was absolutely just like Lizzie to be under my feet, trying to trip me on the off-chance I was carrying something even remotely edible. LOL.
Thank you all for the attention, gifts, and good juju you sent her! She always did LOVE to dive headfirst into a new sweater! And although after almost TWENTY years, there is a weird and obvious absence here, we know she is happier where she is.
