The great auk was a flightless seabird that could grow up to 0.75 meters tall (around 2.5 feet) and weigh about 5 kilograms (about 11 pounds), but despite being a bird, it was an excellent swimmer, using its wings like flippers to dive deep underwater for fish. Sadly, it went extinct in the mid-1800s due to overhunting and habitat destruction, making it one of the earliest recorded human-driven extinctions.
Interesting Fact: Octopuses have three hearts. Two pump blood to the gills, and one pumps it to the rest of the body. When they swim, the heart that delivers blood to the body actually stops beating. This is why octopuses prefer crawling over swimming since it's less tiring.
