Cats can make over 100 different vocal sounds, while dogs can only make about 10.

👉 Why is that?

Cats have a highly flexible larynx and vocal cords, allowing them to produce a wide variety of sounds.

These include:

Meows (used mostly to communicate with humans)

Purrs

Hisses

Chirps

Trills

Yowls

Growls

And subtle variations of each sound.

🧠 Fun Insight:

Kittens meow to their mothers, but adult cats rarely meow at each other. They mostly reserve that sound for communicating with humans — which means they've adapted their vocal "vocabulary" to get our attention or manipulate us (for food, love, or play).

Scientists believe cats "train" their owners by learning which sounds are most effective in getting a response.
