Lawmakers are now discussing increasing the capital gains exclusion on the sale of a primary residence to as much as $500,000 for single homeowners and up to $1 million for married couples filing jointly.

If this proposal becomes law, it could allow many homeowners to keep significantly more of the proceeds from the sale of their home.
