FMB Just Got a New Bridge!

The Big Carlos Pass Bridge, originally constructed in 1965, has been replaced after years of severe wear from constant saltwater corrosion, outdated traffic capacity, and persistent mechanical failures tied to its low-clearance drawbridge mechanism. The former span was classified as structurally risky, with dangerously narrow shoulders that endangered drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike, while its frequent openings for marine traffic triggered chronic backups on the roadway.
Linking the southern tip of Fort Myers Beach to Lovers Key, the aging bridge had deteriorated badly under the relentless Gulf Coast conditions. Its layout no longer met current demands for vehicular flow or non-motorized travel, especially given the cramped shoulders that left little margin for error. The 23-foot vertical clearance forced multiple daily lifts for passing vessels, creating predictable gridlock for commuters and visitors.
The $90.8 million rebuild, launched in summer 2023 and slated for completion by summer 2026, resolves every major shortfall. The new fixed high-level span offers 60 feet of clearance, removing the need for any interruptions to road traffic. It includes expanded travel lanes, protected bike lanes, and a separated multi-use path shielded by barriers—delivering far greater safety across the board. The initiative also covers utility relocations and repurposes debris from the demolished structure into an artificial reef. This upgrade secures reliable, modern infrastructure for the region for at least the next 75 years.

UFO? I saw this coming off of Sanibel. My curiosity was high. So I drove to the end of Fort Myers Beach to get a better look. What is this? Dredging rig?

POST IAN repairs to our beach. Never know what's showing up next. Look at this machine, reminds me of the transformers....note booms look like arms. This is being used to pull up the pipes from the sea floor after the Fort Myers Beach beach renourishment/ rebuild.
