Great news! I was able to find a spray paint that works well on the rubbery plastic of Plastic Platoon figures!
You can see from the second picture where I used a more traditional spray paint that the finish is very shiny and it’s also very tacky to the touch. A result of the paint never drying due to its reaction with the rubber material.
So today I went over to Ace Hardware and I picked up a can of “Rust-oleum camouflage 2X ultra cover, non-reflective finish, flat black spray paint” and it worked great. A nice flat finish that actually dried relatively quickly.
Unfortunately, the rubber material of the plastic will still rub off with excessive rubbing, but it achieves a much nicer finish which is way better for painting.
What do you think of the results?
I painted the figure in a couple hours today. Not too shabby but needs a bit more work. I’ll post a video when it’s ready.
Very basic color scheme: 1. Prime black 2. The skin is a blend of Burnt Red (base) and Red Leather (highlight). 3. The uniform is painted with a base coat of Burnt Umber and then painted with basic “military green”. 4. The highlights are military green + cream and then a thin glaze of military green again. 5. The boots, belt and gun holster are US Field Drab 6. The dirt and dust are US Field Drab (dry brushed) 7. Binoculars are charcoal base and charcoal + cream for highlights. 8. Eyes are cream + dots of charcoal
I DID NOT use a wash on this figure.
I wasn’t very focused on being extremely neat /clean with the paint job because the figure lacks a lot of detail. It’s a very broad sculpt.
Don’t be afraid to be messy. Let me know what you think in the comments 🤘
Was wondering if anyone can tell me more about this figure I bought at the Mullica Hill Toy Show today. The bag said “1960s Auburn Toy Soldier”, but I’ve never heard of Auburn before.
No using ChatGPT either. I can do that myself. I want someone with the knowledge to tell me themselves 🤘

What’s this?! An actual model kit? Of course the tripod broke right away smh.
Full build and painting video in the works if I don’t mess it up too bad 😰
