WAS KARNA PERMITTED TO THE SWAYAMVARA OF PANCHALI?
Quite a few comments have come up stating that Karna participated in the swayamvar and he missed the target. Please see the comments below as to why I have decided that KARNA was DISBARRED FROM THE SWAYAMVARA.
KMG Mahabharata: "And beholding the plight of those monarchs, Karna that foremost of all wielders of the bow went to where the bow was, and quickly raising it strung it and placed the arrows on the string. And beholding the son of Surya--Karna of the Suta tribe--like unto fire, or Soma, or Surya himself, resolved to shoot the mark, those foremost of bowmen--the sons of Pandu--regarded the mark as already shot and brought down upon the ground. Versions of Mahabharata where Karna was disbarred (not allowed) from participating from the Swayamvara:

-> Neelakanta Chathurdari's Jaya Samhita
-> M.N. Nath Dutt Mahabharata
-> Tulu Bharatam
-> Villi Putra Bharatam
This series is closely following Villi Putra Bharatam from Tamil Nad. According to this transcript Karna was not even invited but he came and participated without permission. He got disbarred from the swayamvara by Panchali. In order to participate / (gain entrance) in a swayamvar one MUST have a GOTRA, HOUSE of Repute and defined bloodline. Karna had none. Panchali hence refused his submission to the contest. This is perfectly fair and reasonable decision for a queen to make.
