Today, Mayor Sheffield joined Project Clean Slate to celebrate 10 years of breaking down barriers and opening doors for Detroiters.
For too long, past mistakes stood in the way of jobs, housing, and opportunity. Project Clean Slate is changing that, helping residents move forward with real support and real results.
Participants see an average 23% wage increase within one year of expungement.
And the work continues. Thousands more Detroiters are eligible and ready for a second chance.

Detroit is strengthening how it responds to unsafe housing! â With a new coordinated strategy, the City of Detroit will address long standing issues in multi unit buildings and ensure safer conditions for residents. Because residents deserve housing that is safe, stable, and reliable.â
Mayor Sheffield joined partners, including the Cityâs Office of Mobility Innovation, to announce the winners of a $1.5M clean freight innovation challengeâadvancing electric, hydrogen, and fast-charging technologies right here in our city.

These arenât just students â theyâre the next generation shaping Detroitâs growth and opportunity.
Mayor Sheffield visited the Sachse Construction Academy, a workforce development program that gives Detroit students hands-on experience on active construction sites and direct exposure to careers in the skilled trades.
Through the program, students connect with industry professionals, explore union and non-union career pathways, and gain real-world insight into the work driving Detroitâs development.
Programs like this are helping build a pipeline of local talent, ensuring Detroiters have access to the jobs supporting the cityâs growth.

Mayor Sheffield joined Volunteers of America Michigan and partners to break ground on a $31 million redevelopment that will bring 61 units of permanent supportive housing to the site.
In addition to affordable housing, the development will offer onsite services to support long-term stability, including healthcare access, case management, and job support.
