Many of us woke up to heartbreaking news about the mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, BC.

Even if we are not directly affected, events like this can shake our sense of safety, especially as parents and caregivers. If you’ve been feeling anxious, on edge or overwhelmed by the news, you are not overreacting.

This may be vicarious trauma, a very human response to witnessing suffering.

In our latest blog post, Registered Social Worker Mahira Zakiuddin shares:
—Signs of vicarious traumatization
—How to manage media exposure
—Ways to support yourself and your children
—When to seek additional help

Taking care of yourself is not turning a blind eye. It’s putting on your oxygen mask first so you can show up for others.

Mahira is also offering free 30-minute online support sessions for those impacted by this tragedy or other vicarious trauma. Contact our intake team at intake@torontopsychology.com or 416-551-1759 ext.3 to book.

You don’t have to carry this alone.
