First cutthroat. That grin is the whole post.

We invited Kevin out to VFC HQ for a couple of days, and we got to fish.

One of the most engaged guys in our community and one of the best attitudes we've come across.

Newer to fly fishing, dove all the way in, and hasn't stopped learning since.

That's the kind of angler we're glad to have around.

Almost every fly rod is 9 feet. That's not an accident.

Go shorter, you sacrifice reach. Go longer, you sacrifice accuracy. You have to pick one, and 9 feet sits right in the middle.

Not sure what length you need? Check out our free Rod Finder quiz — it'll tell you your weight, length, and action.

Not a brown. Not a brook. Both.

Tiger trout are a brown and brook cross and they come out sterile. Most of them get made in a hatchery and stocked, though a few show up wild where the two species overlap.

That maze pattern is how you know. And once you've held one, you're always half-hoping the next fish is another.

5-weight or 6-weight? Most people ask it backwards.

The rod doesn't decide the fishing — the fishing decides the rod. A 5 handles most trout days: dries, light nymphing, small-to-mid water. A 6 earns its keep when things get bigger — wind, streamers, heavier bugs.

Start with a 5, add a 6 when the water asks for it.

Still not sure which is yours? Our free 2-minute Fly Rod Finder matches a rod to the water you actually fish.

Fish the bank, not the middle.

That foam bug tucked six inches off the grass is where the big ones sit — tight to the undercut, waiting for something to fall in.

Put it in the seam. Let it ride.

Terrestrial season is on — here's how to actually fish it.

When it heats up, ants, beetles, and hoppers get blown onto the water, and trout will happily come up for the easy meal. But you've got to match what's falling in.

Ants when they're picky. Beetles tight to the bank where they drop from. Hoppers when you want a big target they can't miss.

Then it's all about presentation — fish close to the edge and slap it down a little. That natural plop tells a trout it's food.

Fish like this don't come easy.

Way back in wild country, a cutthroat that ate a nymph — held for a second, then gone.

That's the whole reason we put in the miles.

This one's from our stoneflies and grizzly bears trip — full story here.

See a rise, cast right at it, and you just missed the fish.

That ring isn't where the trout is. It drifts up to eat, then drops back — so the ring you see is downstream of where it's holding.

Cast above the rise and let the fly drift down into its window, right where it's looking.

Aim above the splash, not at it.

Name that bug. 👇🏼

Take a guess before you scroll.

It's a PMD — Pale Morning Dun.

One of the best summer hatches out there, and this brown came up to sip it right off the film.

Nymph or dry fly? Stop guessing and let the water tell you.

Fish rising and sipping up top → tie on a dry and match the hatch.

Surface dead quiet → go under with a nymph, because that's where trout do about 80% of their eating.

Still stuck? Start subsurface. The odds are just better down there.
