I helped a young mother deliver her beautiful baby. She is living with HIV, and right after birth, I sat with her to teach her how to protect her baby from the virus how to give the medications, how often, and why every dose matters.
As I explained, she gently held the bottle and asked, “Please, can you peel the wrapper for me?” Then she paused and added, “My neighbour is a pharmacist… if she sees the medication, will she know what it means?”
In that moment, it hit me again: Stigma is still louder than science. A mother who wants to do everything right for her baby is still worried not about the virus but about being judged .
This is why ending HIV/AIDS by 2030 is not just a global agenda. It is personal. It begins in labour wards, in homes, in families, and in the way we treat women who need our support the most.
What roles can we play to make the 2030 agenda possible? I will be glad to hear your thoughts.
PREGNANCY, PETS & INFECTIONS: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Many women love their pets — they’re family. But did you know that certain infections from pets, especially cats, can be risky during pregnancy?
One of the most dangerous is an infection called Toxoplasmosis. It often comes from cat feces, contaminated soil, or undercooked meat and it can harm your unborn baby if you get infected for the first time while pregnant.
One of my clients, sadly, lost her baby due to toxoplasmosis. It was a silent infection she didn’t know she had until it was too late.
Let’s talk about what toxoplasmosis is, how it spreads, and how you can protect yourself and your baby.
What is Toxoplasmosis? Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. It can be found in: Undercooked or raw meat Unwashed fruits and vegetables Cat feces Contaminated soil or water
Why is it dangerous in pregnancy? If a woman becomes infected for the first time during pregnancy, it can pass to the baby and lead to: -Miscarriage or stillbirth -Premature birth -Brain damage, blindness, or other long-term complications
Signs are often mild or unnoticed Many people don’t even know they’ve been infected. Some may have: -Flu-like symptoms -Swollen lymph nodes -Tiredness and muscle aches
But for the unborn baby, the impact can be devastating.
How to protect yourself: -Wash all fruits & veggies thoroughly -Cook meat well -Avoid cleaning cats during pregnancy. -Wear gloves when gardening -Wash your hands after handling raw food or soil
If you're pregnant: Ask your midwife or doctor about testing if you think you've been exposed
Early detection can reduce the risks to your baby!
A client asked if a woman can have infection after Hysterosalpingography (HSG) after watching our video on blocked fallopian tubes and I thought I should share my response with us🤗.
Yes, Hysterosalpingography (HSG) can sometimes cause an infection, although this is rare.
Let's learn something What is HSG? A hysterosalpingography ( HSG) is a minor X-ray procedure used to view the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes and can also indicate if the uterus is of normal shape and size. It is often used as a routine part of an infertility workup to see if the fallopian tubes are partly or fully blocked.
Risk of Infection After HSG The risk is low (less than 1%–2%), but pelvic infection can occur.
Women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, especially those with a history of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or STIs, are at higher risk.
Infections can involve the uterus, fallopian tubes, or the pelvic area.
Signs of Infection After HSG Seek medical attention if you experience: - Fever or chills - Severe or worsening abdominal or pelvic pain - Foul-smelling vaginal discharge - Heavy bleeding
How to prevent infections after HSG. -Some doctors give antibiotics before or after HSG, especially if you're at risk.
Make sure you’re not having the test if there’s a chance of current infection or pregnancy.
Note! If you or someone recently had HSG and is feeling unwell, it’s important to report the symptoms quickly to a doctor. Early treatment can prevent serious complications.
Have you had HSG before? Share your experiences with us. Share this post with anyone it will be of great help to.
Happy Father’s Day to all men — to those raising children, those hoping to become fathers, and those who carry the memory of a child in their hearts. Today, we honour your strength, love, and the silent sacrifices you make every day.
'' I am experiencing itching around my clitoris, I am 30 weeks pregnant. How should I deal with it? 😭😭😭cos am really suffering''.
Pregnancy and Itching "Down There" – What's Normal, What's Not?
Itching around the clitoris or vulva during pregnancy is something many women experience, especially in the third trimester. Here’s why:
✅ Common Causes: -Hormonal changes: Estrogen levels increase, leading to more vaginal discharge, which can cause irritation.
-Increased blood flow: The genital area becomes more sensitive and may feel itchy or swollen.
-Sweat and moisture: The area can become damp and irritated, especially in warmer weather or when you're less mobile.
⚠️ Possible Infections: Yeast infections are very common in pregnancy due to higher estrogen levels.
Bacterial vaginosis or STIs can also cause itching and should be ruled out by your healthcare provider.
📌 Tips for Relief: -Wear loose, breathable underwear.
-Avoid douching or using scented products.
- Use lukewarm water to clean the area and pat dry. Keep area clean and dry anytime you visit the washroom.
-Drink lot of water
- If itching persists or there's discharge with odor, consult your midwife or doctor.
Remember: Pregnancy brings many changes to your body—and your vulva is no exception. Speak up and get checked if anything feels off. You deserve comfort and peace of mind!
💔 "I had a positive pregnancy test, but there was no baby. How did that happen? What causes that?" Let’s talk about Blighted Ovum.
As a midwife, one of the hardest conversations I’ve had with clients is explaining a diagnosis they never saw coming — a blighted ovum.
But what is it, really? Let me break it down in simple terms 👇🏽
📚 What is a Blighted Ovum?
A blighted ovum (also called an anembryonic pregnancy) happens when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus but the embryo doesn’t develop.
🟠 The pregnancy sac begins to grow… 🟠 Hormones like hCG (which pregnancy tests detect) still rise… 🟠 But sadly, there is no baby inside the sac.
So yes — you can test positive for pregnancy and still experience a blighted ovum.
Why does it happen?
Most times, it’s due to chromosomal problems — something goes wrong at the earliest stages of cell division, and the body recognizes that the embryo can't develop properly. It’s not your fault. It’s not something you caused. And you’re not alone.
❤️ To anyone going through this:
You had a pregnancy. You had hopes, dreams, and plans. Even if there was no visible baby, your grief is valid.
I see you. I honour your journey. And I’m here if you need support.
✨ As a midwife, I want to empower women with knowledge — not just for healthy pregnancies, but also through the hard moments too.

Lot of pregnant women become anxious immediately they are told they will have ceaserean section. Why?
Have you wondered about the emotional and psychological support we can give women before ceaserean section?
How long should one wait before having another child after a ceaserean session?
Breastfeeding is a skill that needs to be learnt! Mothers who think they are experienced should note that their babies are new to breastfeeding.
We had an exciting time of education yesterday. I talked about importance of breastfeeding, challenges of breastfeeding mothers, solutions to the challenges. We also talked about some Myths and misconceptions about breastfeeding. I ended the conversation with some tips and best practices for a successful breastfeeding.
I loved my audience, they asked very interesting questions. Let me share some with you. Can a breastfeeding mother pierce her nipples? What support can husband's give their wives when they are breastfeeding? When can a baby start using feeding bottles?
Thank you Barrier Breakers for reaching out to me. Thanks to all participants form Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria. My special appreciation to my friends who joined to support their sister. I don't take it for granted.
