Sketchbook play helps me to relax and experiment. I work fast, not overthinking, and am reminded this is often the best process for me when creating my 'real art'. Of course, these are real art too, but there is less pressure and no expectation. That's why I prefer to work on an inexpensive or better still free surface to rid me of my preciousness of it! I hope to start some larger pieces of abstract artworks in the new year, so playing like this can spark ideas. Do you allow yourself some to creatively play?

This is a new mixed media collage I have been working on the past week. I started with mark making, followed by acrylic ink and fluid acrylics to give an interesting watery feel. Yesterday I started collage which I really like. Sometimes it’s daunting adding collage when I really like the underpainting! But the beauty of the underpainting is that I can leave parts un collaged. I have uploaded a very fast time lapse of my first collage session on ten this piece- I will try to do a normal speed for at least some of the next session!
