Sadly, we tend to only start missing those whom we take for granted when they are no longer around.

We are born with our personalities, but character is shaped through our response to adversities, weaknesses, opposition and yes, heartbreak.

I am naturally impatient and not empathetic and to top it all, I have Aspergers', Dyscalculia and Dyspraxia. It is so easy to just throw in the towel and give up because I have been given the 'wrong deck of cards' in life.

But I believe I have been given specific challenges to forge character, which is a deliberate and conscious choice to say no to my natural tendencies, to COMMIT, WITH THE SAME LOVE that unique individuals have shown me, to go...all....the....way.

World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10th.

The mind houses not only our thoughts, but our hearts and desires, which greatly influence what we do and how we act.

When the mind goes, which we see happening more during COVID and also amongst sufferers of Dementia, it is a frightening thing to witness a person's faculties shutting down slowly but surely.

That's why it's so important to spend time and effort making certain of what and whom we believe in.

Techniques of self motivation and feel good approaches can only go so far.

A mind fixed on real hope can find meaning, joy and purpose even during the bleakest of times.

As a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Counsellor, I learn daily what it means to have the 'right mind' so that I can help those who feel as if they are 'losing their minds'.

As the battle with COVID rages on, the number of casualties continue daily.

It is easy to become desensitised to pain and the daily reports of lives lost, but know this- for every soul that left, there has been a mother, father, sibling or friend left behind and even if those who feel suicidal think no one would miss them, the truth is that every single life/soul matters and there is always sorrow and grief when there are 'empty chairs at empty tables'.

If anything, COVID has shown me the fragility of things I used to value and constantly serves as an apt reminder of what really matters.

Am dedicating this song to a late beloved ex-student, whose identity I shall not disclose due to consideration for her family's privacy.

However, like me, this student had Special Educational Needs (SEN) since young, but never allowed it to define her character, heart and her faith.

Her positive attitude and response was always a source of great encouragement to her teachers and peers.

We met again years later when I was teaching elsewhere and continued our friendship; but the bonds I've formed with her and her schoolmates continue to reverberate strongly in my life as it reinforces once again, that aside from tangible KPIs, the enduring relationships and lives touched form the HEART of what education is really about.

Since this forms the CORE PREOCCUPATION of what one does as an Educator, then, one should never lose sight and be alert to any other distraction that may supersede this primary calling.

I dedicate this Korean song to my beloved wife on her birthday today.

This number is from her favourite K-Drama "Do you like Brahms", which is on Netflix.

The best part of the show was how the two characters, in opposition to how the world regarded compatibility, still married after much hardships because they valued each other's hearts far above their respective musical talents; which greatly mirrors me and my wife's long journey of how we came together since we knew each other as little kids.

However, regardless of whether one is single or married, the main gist of the song can be summed up in this way-

"Others may think you are worthless, not valuable or gifted, but because I got to know the real you and see that what's in your heart is really beautiful, I commit to loving you as a person."

This is the ethos forming the basis of why I chose to doggedly persevere as a teacher all these years, and currently, am still pressing on as a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Counsellor.

Love, which is an intrinsic motivator, is not based on how useful the other person is to our own interests, but is always giving and really seeking the best for others.
