ایک شہر میں ایک بہت بڑے عالم رہتے تھے۔ لوگ دور دور سے ان کے پاس علم سیکھنے آتے۔ انہیں اپنے علم پر بڑا ناز تھا اور وہ اکثر دوسروں کو کمتر سمجھتے تھے۔ ایک دن وہ ملا نصرالدین کے بارے میں سن کر ان سے ملنے آئے، یہ سوچتے ہوئے کہ ملا کو اپنی عقل سے لاجواب کر دیں گے۔
عالم نے پوچھا: “ملا! بتاؤ، علم بڑا ہے یا عمل؟”
ملا نصرالدین مسکرا کر بولے: “جناب! پہلے آپ یہ بتائیں کہ بھوکے کو کتاب دی جائے یا روٹی؟”

یہ کہانی مشہور دانشور اور مزاحیہ کردار ملا نصرالدین کے گرد گھومتی ہے، جن کی سادگی میں بھی گہری دانائی چھپی ہوتی تھی۔ ایک دن ایک بہت بڑے عالمِ دین اور فلسفی ملا نصرالدین کے گاؤں میں آئے۔ وہ اپنے علم، کتابوں اور لمبی لمبی باتوں پر بڑا فخر کرتے تھے اور سمجھتے تھے کہ دانائی صرف کتابوں سے حاصل ہوتی ہے۔
گاؤں والوں نے اس عالم سے درخواست کی کہ وہ ملا نصرالدین سے ملیں، کیونکہ ملا اپنی باتوں سے لوگوں کو ہنسا کر بھی سچ سمجھا دیتے تھے۔ عالم نے مسکرا کر کہا، “میں ایک سادہ آدمی سے کیا سیکھ سکتا ہوں؟”
