Today marks 20 years in the USA 🇺🇸 and what better time to share our grassroots story?
20 years ago, we said goodbye to our home in 🇳🇬, and came to the USA with big dreams. 3 years later, we’d meet for the first time at a graduation party.
As international students, we hustled.
I tutored math on campus, and every once in a while braided my friends’ hair, or babysat a sweet one-year-old boy.
Meanwhile, Seyi tutored math on campus too. He tried to flip used cars, and in grad school joined a startup building augmented-reality glasses like Meta Ray Bans, long before they were mainstream. That’s probably where his love for startups began.
By the time we got married, we had “grown-up” jobs, but the hustle didn’t stop.
👉🏽 I launched TradsLoft, selling ready-to-wear African print, with Seyi as my side-kick.
👉🏽 Seyi built “His Arena” (a church management platform) and Whipik (a storytelling platform for African writers).
👉🏽 Together, we started investing in real estate, startups, and stocks.
Motherhood shifted my path again.
During maternity leave, I launched a blog, “Simple Naija Girl”. That turned into our podcast Life and Some Jara… and eventually into The Shofs you know today.
As we look back on the past 20 years, we’re grateful for every twist, challenge, and blessing. God has been so good to us, and our story is still just beginning.
