Week 99er

Since I can't work on some projects I want to right now, it's probably time to start working on another I've been putting off for a while (yikes.. .a long while). This is just a start of that project, but probably going to be my goal through 2021.

When I was in college, we found piles of old negatives my grandfather took while serving in World War II. I took, and retook a Black and White photography class just to have access to the dark room. I took the time to clean and save the negatives and store them. But even after two terms, I only had about a hundred of the well over 1000 negatives. Let's just say Grandpa loved taking pictures, it's where my dad got it and most likely us too.

Then life gets busy right? And since these are simply irreplaceable - we weren't sending these negatives off to anywhere to be processed. Medium format isn't easy to get scanned. Well, a couple years ago, I purchased an Epson scanner that can scan virtually any size negative - and did a few before I got busy again.

Now, I'm taking the time to process each one slowly. They are snapshots of family, of people we don't know, of the War and parts of Europe he visited while he was over there. Some negatives are from cameras he took from people on the other side.

So my plan for 2021, preserve these memories. Because no matter how protected we keep the negatives they will break down eventually. I will be creating a Youtube series on some of the images, but not all of them - there are some definitely NSFW ones mixed in as well. Each image is taking a few minutes to scan for the right resolution so we can preserve and edit once we can get some details out. Now, some wont ever be perfect, old film with scratches and issues. But I'm excited to see what little bits of history we have hidden in here.

So here we go, time to scan over 1000 negatives and see these memories that haven't seen daylight in decades. Then editing, and hopefully identifying some places and people. It's going to be a long ride.
