Shortcuts on the Road to Mastery
Yes there are shortcuts, cheat codes, hacks, whatever you want to refer to as shortening the learning curve toward Mastering anything, not just business but in your life!
To that point, I'll humbly share my pitiful journey of racing my Ducati 1098 Streetfighter S on the Portland International Raceway track and the single distinction that made all the difference in the world… Even if you have never ridden before you can tell in the picture the moment that Mastery Hack was implemented.
As you can see my original Motorcycle was a 1987 Honda Magna and my ego made me believe I was a great motorcycle rider because I ground down the bolt on the bottom of my foot peg from laying that bike down so far. However, you can see in the image that my first track day after purchasing this 130 horsepower beast, it was far from great. I felt like the old lady from the old “Where’s the beef” commercial, lacking elegance.
I left the track knowing I had room for improvement. So I hoped I’d pick up skills from riding it through the hills and planned to attend another track day the next year for skills improvement. One year of riding under my belt and I was WAY MORE comfortable! However, I was far from great… In hindsight, I would say far from good.
This time when I pulled away from the track I knew I was not training frequently enough. So I went back the following week but half way through the day, I was incrementally better than I was the week before.
Then EVERYTHING CHANGES, serendipity stepped in. A piece of good karma showed up to grace me with the hack that radically shortened my learning curve! You see, several years earlier, I met a random guy who messed up his front tire pretty bad on a Leif Erikson trail 10 miles away from his car but we were only 1 mile from Cayenne. So I cut my ride short, threw his bike on my rack, drove over to his car, parked on Thurman next to St. Honoré Bakery and sat to have breakfast. We ended up having a wonderful chat. But when I see him on the track, years later, I barely recognize him so I do what all men do when we see someone but don’t recall where we met them, nod our head up to the air as we say “sup.” Short for what’s up? I knew he felt the same way because he said “sup” in return. But a few minutes later he is running toward me screaming “Thurman trail!” Then BANG! The memory of that day I helped him out came back to me instantly.
He asked what I was doing at the track and I shared my situation with this new motorcycle and he declared “YOU ARE MINE!” He shared with me what he does for a living. He literally trains the best in the world, professional motorcycle racers, on how to get even better and he was going to focus on me for the rest of the day as a way to thank me for helping him years before.
NOTE: this is the lynch pin to Hacking Mastery. I no longer had good trainers improving my skills, rather I had the BEST trainer. That is like rolling up to the local golf range with Tiger Woods’ trainer or grabbing the golf instructor that just so happens to be working behind the counter.
The major difference is the outcomes they create. You see he is used to creating the BEST in the WORLD not helping people find small improvements like the pro at the golf range. So bottom line on the outcome: I learned more in a few hours than I did a few decades of riding motorcycles on the street.
So my question for you is, “In the area you desire the greatest improvement, do you have a good coach or one of the world’s finest mentors?” If you have the former, how much longer will you spend grinding out improvements before you turn to a master for strategic insights that can radically improve your performance, making you 2x maybe 10x more effective than you are now. They know the 2 millimeter distinctions that make the world of difference between those who are great and the rare who are known as Outstanding!

Holy SHIT, it’s the BIG 5-0!
Why in the heck am I posting a pic with my shirt off, well that was my accountability to hit my goal of my weight and body fat starting with a 1. As of yesterday, I have 19.9% body fat at 193.6lbs and I feel great!
However, my physical wellbeing has not always been so good. Most of my 40’s I was in serious pain, many of you won’t know that but those in proximity sure had to hear me wince and cry BUT I have been out of pain for the last couple of years and I want to thank those who helped me get here.
First debilitating experience was Feb 2012 on a 2 week transatlantic maiden voyage of a new Disney Cruise ship. My nerve was light up from fingertip to my toe due to poor body ecology. On that cruise I learned drugs wouldn’t help reduce my nerve pain. I would feel the pain but feel high. I imagine you are thinking to yourself “Well you didn’t try a strong enough of a drug”, all I know is I stopped at morphine, which they offered but I needed to stay in the nurses cabin the entire time if I took it.
Thanks to Dr. Allen Knecht, his treatments kept me in the game and his persistent perspective of a future healing was an inspiration. When my business partner, Chet Holmes, passed away that year, it put my desire for optimal health on high alert. Thanks to my friend, Howard Cohn, mastery of Neuro Emotional Technique, helped me heal many of my emotions that were and would have gone on to negatively impact my health.
Come 4th of July weekend in 2016, I hit rock bottom and simply couldn’t move but my friend, Nickleby Basho, who helped by massaging me for 6 hours at a time, pulled me through it. That trip led to me being in a recliner for a week and a half. Unable to move, I would ask my children to drain my zip lock bags that I peed in, that was the ultimate humiliation. The kids witnessed that their father was no longer Superman … that is when I committed to taking 100% control of my health and showing them that I might have Kryptonite in my pocket but it is not permanent.
Maria Whalen and her invincible wellness system pulled me through and guided my wife on how to support me through the darkest of times. If I could get the world to simply drink spring water like I have since I met her, we would have a healthier world. We were able to leverage Immuno Labs food allergy test for the entire family and my “allergy” to brewer’s yeast and baker’s yeast woke me up to things that would inflame me quickly! Thanks to childhood influence from my Grandfather Ted Miller Sr. I started growing my own food, something I do to this day.
Michael Drew set an example of what a great physique could look like and influenced me to challenge myself and my body and do a Spartan race. I also found great healing in the waters of the Pacific Ocean and grounding on the island of Maui from our annual trips. I started to use the reference guide “Messages from the body, their psychological meaning” and it helped me grow past ideas like, my toe pain is not always about my toe.
I then met Gordon Hay and started using the Aline inserts he co-founded. I can’t tell you how many men with back pain that I gifted these to. My Friend Mark Lipsomb turned me onto wide toed shoes and freed my feet up. Speaking at a Leadership To Legacy event for Chiropractors, I met Dr George Gonzalez, creator of Quantum Neurology. That was the 1st time I saw progress that was permanent! Dr Robert Rettig got me through the several impacts over the years from the covid nonsense, feeling like a champ! Dr Allen Knecht referred me to Dr David Palacios who treated him with ozone and wow what a game changer ozone has been in my life. Getting my injured ligaments the oxygen it needs to heal is near impossible due to minimal blood flow, however, oxygen in a free radical state injected into the area was a major turning point toward becoming pain free. Promolife is a great organization if you look to purchase a home unit for treatments.
Once I got out of pain, I was able to focus on regaining my strength and the 2 things that I love but I told my lovely wife, Stephanie Vaughan-Miller, to NOT get, were the Tonal and Peloton. I eat my words Dear, I love them both!
Dr Steve Zodkoy got me to measure myself daily … can’t improve what you can’t measure. Big shoutout to Sacha Basho for turning me onto Dr Mindy Pelz. She got me fired up to do multi-day water fasts and I’ve been intermittently fasting for years. In fact, I just wrapped up a 5.5 day water fast today, which gave me stem cells I was willing to pay $5,000 for, score! Alex Charfen got me to try measuring macros for 3 months which got me into my weekly meal prep on Sundays.
It makes life easy having the majority of my meals prepped and knowing they are healthy for me. Also, Mark Lipscomb got me onto a carnivore diet for 3 months that taught me exactly how much protein I needed to build muscle mass. I worked out for years with little gains, ramped protein up to almost 200 grams and things changed right away.
I’ve sighted only the top 20% that made the 80% difference but that does not downplay the other 80% that made my life at 50 years old to be pain free and sincerely has me confident that 50’s will be the healthiest of my life.
