Heinali

Dear friends,

I am launching a Bandcamp subscription:
heinali.bandcamp.com/backstage

To remain independent, free from market pressures and institutional agendas, I rely on the support of listeners like you.

As a thank-you, anyone who chooses to support me will receive my complete self-released back catalogue, along with all future self-releases and exclusive backstage-only works, like the 'Ah! Sun-flower' demo based on William Blake's poem and recorded in 2021 with Kateryna Levytska (soprano), now available for subscribers.

Your support means I can continue creating music on my terms and share it directly with you.

Take care,
Heinali

Heinali's Aves Rubrae is now out on Bandcamp!
heinali.bandcamp.com/track/aves-rubrae

Initially commissioned by the MoMA in New York in 2023 and recorded in one take on my modular synthesiser—an instrument that I set up informed by artistic research, enabling me to improvise polyphony and monophony, borrowing techniques and ideas from medieval composers & theorists and contemporary fields of analogue synthesis & generative music.

Similar to the organa of the Notre Dame polyphony, Aves Rubrae is an organum that features swift upper voices with intricate melodies created by the machine overlaid on the slow-moving drones of the lower voice. Unlike the Notre Dame polyphony, composed for church celebrations, 'Aves Rubrae' has an eschatological tone more fitting for the world at hand. The piece references Coil’s 'Red Birds Will Fly Out Of The East And Destroy Paris In A Night', citing the apocalyptic prophecy of Nostradamus—an homage to one of the most influential artists whose music shaped me during my teenage years.

Festiwal Ambientalny has published the full video of my recent Organa live show in Wroclaw.

Organa is a structured improvisation on a modular synthesiser, an instrument that is set up informed by artistic research that enables me to improvise polyphony and monophony, borrowing techniques and ideas from medieval composers & theorists and contemporary fields of analogue synthesis & generative music. It explores the intersection of technology and the sacred, the past and the present, the Providence and Contingency. It is loosely based on the XII-XIII century polyphony of the Notre Dame school and the monophony of Hildegard von Bingen.

I'll perform a short Ukrainian army & humanitarian aid fundraiser live set from the Lviv bomb shelter, on my modular system I managed to save.

The patch is loosely based on the XII century organa of the Notre-Dame school and earlier polyphony. It's in the foundation of my new album Organa I couldn't finish due to the war.

The live stream will take place (hopefully) on April 2, 7 pm GMT+3

With love from Ukraine,

If you're feeling particularly generous, the best way to show your support is to order something from my Bandcamp page—a $10 digital release roughly amounts to 3000 Spotify streams:

Yesterday I performed my first concert after a year long hiatus.

Coincidentally, it turned out to be my biggest show so far.

And the first time I played organa I've been working on for the past year. And what a place to perform in! St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv is more than a century older than Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, XII century polyphonic music of which lies in the foundation of my patch.

I'm grateful to Ekaterina Lisovenko & Blck Box for the stunning visuals and Bouquet Kyiv Stage team for their top-notch professionalism. And everyone who came and listened. There were so many people ❤
