Egyptian-style statue of Ptolemy I Soter, first pharaoh of the Ptolemaic dynasty, c.305 - 283 BCE.

Such a beautiful example of the combination of Egyptian and Greek styles in the early Ptolemaic period!

From the British Museum:
"The 'nemes' headdress, plain at the top but ribbed on the lappets, and the uraeus identify the subject as a ruler. The mouth has drill holes in the corners, forcing the lips into a wide smile. The wide, fleshy nose, cheeks and chin are representative of portraits of the Thirtieth Dynasty and Ptolemaic periods, but the slightly raised eyebrows are carved in a more naturalistic manner than those on Late Period sculpture. The large, fleshy ears are also characteristic of Ptolemaic portraiture."

Announcement!!!

Alexandria: A Hellenistic World Podcast will be moving permanently to a MONTHLY release schedule!!

My goal is to release main eps on the 3rd Saturday of each month, and B-sides (if there is one) on the 4th Sat.

This was always the plan, but during this summer I was able to make the first round of eps a little faster. I'm glad I got to do so.
