How often should you feed your sourdough starter?

It depends! Let me break it down for you.

If your starter is still young, it might not be ready to be stored in the fridge just yet. I recommend keeping it at room temperature for at least two months, feeding it daily. Don’t worry about waste, you can use the discard in many recipes!

Once your starter is well-established, you only need to feed it when you're ready to bake with it. Why? Because you can store it in the fridge. In the cooler environment, your starter requires much less attention than when kept at room temperature.

I feed mine at least once a week. However, when stored properly (I use an airtight jar for mine), it can go over a month without feeding in the fridge. Don’t forget: a sourdough starter is incredibly resilient.

Room temperature: daily feedings.
Fridge: feed once every week.
