Osayuki the Double Amputee

How do I climb stairs as a double amputee? As a double amputee above the knee, I find climbing up and down stairs difficult using my prosthetic legs. I use a lift whenever possible.
But sometimes in public places the lift is out of service so I have to take the stairs to get to my destination. This video is an example of how I would do it.

Sorry for not posting as regularly. I’ve been busy with uni deadlines and my other commitments.

Join us for a day of action on 29th July to ask the new Government to commit to building accessible housing.

2 years ago, the previous Government committed to a minimum standard of accessibility and adaptability for new build homes. But they didn’t follow through with this.

There are not enough homes that meet disabled people’s needs. An average wheelchair user in England now joining the social housing waiting list can expect to wait up to 47 years for a council home that is suitable for them.

That’s why we’re calling for the new Labour government to implement this standard and for 10% of homes to be wheelchair accessible too.

The demonstration against Rishi Sunak scrapping the dedicated Minister for Disabled People will be taking place on 28th December 12pm at Downing Street. It will be a stationary demo so there will be no marching to make it accessible for everyone.

This is more context to my latest Shorts video.

When I worked in multiple NHS hospital Trusts as a trainee pharmacist, sometimes other staff assumed that I was a patient despite me wearing my ID badge and lanyard. These staff couldn’t believe that a wheelchair user could be working in the NHS so they asked me questions like this! I found this annoying. They were surprised when I confirmed that I worked there. NHS staff should know that disabled people are capable of working.

Recently the media and the government have been perpetuating the belief that disabled or ill people are lazy, and there are discussions about how to get more disabled people into work. If the government really wants to get more disabled people to work, they should remove the barriers that are placed in disabled people’s way. Many disabled people are discriminated against in their workplaces. If all disabled people are given the support and reasonable adjustments that they need at work, they will be able to do their jobs properly. Then they won’t be forced to leave their jobs either. However not all disabled or ill people can work and they should be supported too.

I’m one of the many disabled people who has faced accessibility issues at work and I’ve been forced to change my career. Disabled people aren’t lazy.

Also I’m preparing to go back to university and move to my university halls of residence next week. That’s why I have been uploading more short form videos at the moment.

Osayuki the Double Amputee

Happy Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month!
Being a double amputee can be challenging at times, especially due to living in a society and a world that still isn’t fully accessible for disabled people.
I’ve learnt a lot from being a double amputee as I always have to adapt in different situations.
Being a double amputee makes me unique which is awesome! It’s ok to be different and not look like everyone else. It took me a long time to feel this way.
To anyone who may be struggling with being an amputee or how you look generally, remember that you’re special 😁
