NEW: Texas AG Ken Paxton announces Major investigation into Major Grocery Chains Spraying PESTICIDES on their āOrganicā Foods without Custumer Knowledge
The pesticide at issue is ProduceMaxx, an EPA-registered antimicrobial pesticide containing high concentrations of hypochlorous acidāa form of chlorine. Thousands of stores across the United States spray it on produce through misting systems to control bacteria and extend shelf life.
Consumers buying organic produce assume they havenāt been treated with pesticides. They donāt know that stores are spraying pesticides on the organic produce while itās on the shelf. And they arenāt being told that they need to wash their organic produce before eatingāeven though federal law requires produce sprayed with chlorine to be rinsed with drinking water before consumption to maintain USDA organic certification. Many grocery stores hide their misting equipment and ProduceMaxx containers from customer view and provide no signage or warning labels about the pesticide treatment and the need to wash the organic produce.
"Many Texans choose organic produce specifically to avoid harmful pesticides," said Attorney General Paxton. "Itās not only wrong for grocers to mislead consumers about chemicals pesticides being sprayed on their foodāit may very well be illegal. There should be no shortcuts when it comes to food safety, and my office will ensure that Texas consumers are not misled about the state of the produce they purchase."
Attorney General Paxton is demanding that if Texas grocery stores continue using antimicrobial pesticides like ProduceMaxx, they must, at minimum, install clear signage informing consumers that their produce has been sprayed with a pesticide and include instructions to rinse before consumption in accordance with federal law and USDA guidelines.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will subpoena Les Wexner, the longtime friend and client of Jeffrey Epstein, along with two men who worked for the late convicted sex offender.
It was the culmination of a flurry of subpoena requests Wednesday from rank-and-file members of the panel, several of which were ultimately approved. The committee also voted to subpoena Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn ā Epsteinās lawyer and accountant, respectively.
It shows how the House Oversight Committee could continue to find itself at the center of efforts to re-investigate the Epstein case as the Justice Department presides over a prolonged and rocky rollout of materials.
The successful motions, brought by the top Democrat on panel, California Rep. Robert Garcia, appeared to be the result of an agreement between Garcia and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), who also successfully moved to subpoena American businessman Neville Singham and journalist Seth Harp.
āThere is probably no one more important as it relates to the financing and the work of this investigation, which both sides of the aisle are interested in,ā Garcia said, of Wexner. āPublic reporting has documented their longstanding ties. He should answer our questions in a non-partisan way to get the truth.ā
Luna concurred: āI think that this is a sound motion for subpoena because Les Wexner has been named by victims and also, too, is in a number of documentaries,ā she said and urged her colleagues to join her in supporting the effort.
