It’s been 2 years and Real Madrid still can’t make Vinícius & Mbappe work together…If a new project is needed, what should the club do?

Is Florentino Pérez becoming the villain at Real Madrid?

Everyone is saying mbappe is madrid's BIGGEST PROBLEM …but no one is ready for this conversation.

Yes, his pressing is an issue. Yes, his positioning can be better. And yes, the balance with Vinícius Júnior isn’t perfect. But how is he suddenly the main problem when the numbers don’t support that narrative at all?

Creating? Almost identical.
This season:

Mbappé → 87 chances created
Vini → 76 chances created
Big chances: 12 vs 13
Final third passes: 95 vs 103
xA: 8.4 vs 6.9
Touches in opposition box: 307 vs 379
Dribbles: 84 vs 108
That’s not a “creator vs finisher” gap.
That’s two players operating at almost the same creative level.

Even in 2024:

Vini → 81 chances (18 big chances)
Mbappé → 66 chances (16 big chances)
Dribbles: 110 vs 107
Again… very close.
Finishing? Not even close.
This season:
Mbappé → 39 goals from 32.6 xG
Vini → 17 goals from 20 xG
Big chances missed: 26 vs 23
Winning goals: 13 vs 7
2024:
Mbappé → 44 goals from 35.1 xG
Vini → 22 goals from 17.1 xG
So one player is creating at a similar level…
…and scoring almost DOUBLE.
Assists? The most misleading stat here.
This season:
Mbappé → 8.4 xA, 5 assists
Vini → 6.9 xA, 9 assists
2024:
Vini → 11.8 xA, 16 assists
Mbappé → 8.7 xA, 5 assists

So what’s happening?Mbappé is creating chances…his teammates just aren’t finishing them.That’s not a creativity issue. That’s a team issue.

Has Vini declined?

Let’s go back to 2023 (before Mbappé):
Vini had:

49 chances created
14 big chances
102 dribbles
17.6 xG, 24 goals
7.5 xA, 9 assists
Now compare that to today:
76 chances created
13 big chances
108 dribbles
20 xG, 17 goals
6.9 xA, 9 assists
He hasn’t declined drastically. This is his level.
So what’s the real question? If you remove Mbappé…who replaces:
• 40+ goals a season
• 80+ chances created
That’s not one player.That’s 2–3 players minimum.
And yet… he’s the problem?Let’s be real.

Mbappé is a problem off the ball. But he is NOT the main problem. Not even close to the top 5.

The real issues:

• No elite deep-lying playmaker (DLP)
There’s no one who can control tempo, dictate rhythm, and progress the ball under pressure. No one to consistently break lines from deep. Because of that, players like Mbappé and Vini receive the ball in worse positions, with no structure around them. The attack looks chaotic because the foundation is missing.

• No proper right winger to balance the attack
Everything is overloaded on the left. Vini plays there, Mbappé drifts there, and the attack becomes predictable. There’s no natural width on the right to stretch defenses, which makes it easier for teams to shut Madrid down.

• No elite center-back to anchor defense & build-up
The defense is not just about stopping goals—it’s about starting attacks. Madrid lack a dominant CB who can organize, win duels, and progress the ball cleanly. That’s why both the build-up and defensive stability suffer.

• No clear system / managerial identity

Madrid had Carlo in 2024–25.Then Xabi Alonso for 6 months. Now it’s Álvaro Arbeloa.Three different managers.Three different ideas. But the same problems.

Lack of midfield profiles. No proper RW.Players not fully fit.An incomplete squad. At that point, it stops being a manager issue…and becomes a structural problem.

• Squad depth not at Madrid level
Beyond the main stars, the drop-off is real. Too many players are underperforming in terms of goals and impact. That’s why the burden always falls on the same few players.

• Constant injuries & medical concerns
No continuity. No rhythm. No chemistry. Players are constantly in and out, which makes it impossible to build consistency. This is not just bad luck anymore—it’s a serious underlying issue.

You can remove Kylian Mbappé tomorrow…
…and all of these problems will still exist.

Rodri brings control. Structure. Calm.
