Happy Tuesday! 🌸

Let me walk you through my gel formulating experiments and adventures! I wanted to make a nourishing & soothing flaxseed gel prepoo detangler, but ended up with a flaxseed cream detangler.

This video is not a tutorial but just the process I want to bring you along. The batches lasted me long and I can’t wait to recreate it with a tutorial worth sharing.

Are you team diy flaxseed gel or not?

What’s your current hairstyle? šŸ’‡šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

I’m still rocking mini twists, so this for sure looks like a mini twist journey in 2024! I will of course wear some wash&gos here and there but for now I enjoy not detangling my hair šŸ˜…!

I keep it very simple with cleansing & conditioning. And moisturise with diy rosemary water and rosemary oil. When I detangle and retwist I simply use a cream and whipped butter.

Why don’t I use gel or mousse for this hairstyle? Because my hair type, curl type and texture is very prone to matting and locing up. Butters and oils prevent this and there’s no need to add stylers with hold, because the twists can hold themselves without unraveling.

Happy Holidays! What are you up to this Christmas? I’m rocking mini twists, formulating body butters, lip balms and hair creams for myself! 🄰 I could really get used to mini twists, I didn’t know how low maintenance and convenient those are. It’s my first time rocking them like this. I kind of enjoy to see my hair hanging down but I’m afraid of opening and detangling my hair the same time. This is week 3 of mini twists, done on blown out hair and washed once with clay masks. šŸ˜‰

I plan to retwist them by end of December and rocking them for the entire February. So yes, I’m betraying my wash&gos. What’s your current hairstyle?

Oh my Goodness! 😘 We have made it to 1k followers! Thank you so much!! 🄹Iā€˜m very grateful to the slow but steady growth every single one of you is giving me! It’s a long post, so grab a tea, coffee & cookies… I’m currently busy reuploading some of my old reels on IG that I took down because of possible music copyright strikes in Germany. It’s affecting my growth there and it’s a lot of work to add Epidemic Sound Music audio to one hundred short videos. šŸ˜… But we’re getting there. I was very undecided for over half a year about the full reuploads, but now that the year’s ending coming closer, I better do it now.

It was fun to show you how different styling products can result in different curly hair looks with my hair texture. I did this starting summer 2021. So over two years of product reviews on how to especially do clumped hairstyles. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get your (4c) hair clumping. There’s a price range for everyone. At this point only the weather, especially humidity is your enemy. Doing very defined washngos on this curl type and curl texture is only effective when you have mastered product layering within your price range without flakes. And you don’t care about high shrinkage.

What brands have I tried out so far for successfully?

Amika, Aunt Jackie’s, BouclĆØme, Camille Rose Naturals, Ecoslay, Flora&Curl, Giovanni, Innersense, Kinky Curly, Mielle, The Doux, Trepadora, Uncle Funky’s, Up North Naturals & As I Am…

That’s a whole lot of brands and products. I tried using one product line or at least products within each brand. But I wasn’t always successful. UFD Curly Magic Gel has become even more popular in 2021/22 and has proven to be a very versatile layering option, no matter if it’s leave-ins, cream stylers, foams/mousse or other gels, jellies & custards. I know what my hair can do and not.

Now it’s about diy and better length retention. Looking at my old videos, I can definitely say I was more busy with chopping too much hair away on a frequent basis. Just for looks. And see it got me nowhere besides fullness. 🤭 So 2024 will definitely be more intentional with the growth. No more unnecessary hair cuts.

At this point I won’t be able to provide you with full detailed ingredient lists. It need to work on my hair first before being to fast sharing everything to the public. Only when I feel it’s save to share and can be replicated without issues. But there will be lots of inspirational videos to keep you on track. I’m happy to bring you on this journey with me and hope it will inspire you to mix more than just raw eggs and avocados.

It’s not the full ingredient list but what’s in these lovely pictures?

1. Cocoa butter, shea butter, buriti oil solid conditioner bar
2. Shea butter, oat, agave & molasses deep conditioner
3. Aloe vera & mongogo oil curling cream custard (šŸ˜†yes, I’m very obsessed with finding the right oil formulation without altering the hold of my curls. Why layering several products if it could just be formulated in favour of these tiny curls to fully clump?)
4. Sea buckthorn, andiroba & ungurahua (pataua, rahua, seje) face/body lotion 30:70% oil to water emulsion. (šŸ‘ŒšŸ¾First was a fail because I’m using other non popular emulsifiers. Second worked out.)

Behind the scenes when I don’t upload new videos! When I started my new Youtube channel in April 2021, I had two uploads a week in mind. But soon realised this social media thing is not what it used to be back in the day. I’ve got a life. And this is a 9-5 job with zero payment, if you want to take things serious. šŸ˜… With all my camera gear in the back, I needed to learn how to properly film, edit & upload videos that can resonate with me.

I wanted my channel to be a mixture of lifestyle, diy skin, beauty& hair care mixed with natural hair tutorials and chit chats. But didn’t just want to copy and upload countless of the same videos we’re used to. I wanted more innovation, more science in the back and the proper why behind product formulations.

Now thinking about another flaxseed gel without any preservatives is not what I want my channel to be. I’m subscribed to Swiftcraftymonkey to learn and read everything about cosmetic chemistry and how to create hair & body products. It feels like getting a chemistry degree even though it isn’t and I would be terrible in doing maths. 😩 But I know now how to write down a formulation idea in percentages that can be broken down into grams.

‪@FromAto4z‬ told me years ago to start formulating my own conditioners & lotions because of my hair care knowledge. Yet I was more afraid than a chicken to make an emulsion with oil & high water amount & preservatives. But when I got fed up with buying more and more conditioner to find the perfect match for my hair, I just started. A very popular company also took my IG content for their sales without my knowledge. So the time was right. Spring 2023.

Tapioca gel mixed with an online bought aloe vera conditioner it was. It gave me crazy curl clumping, but also nightmares because I didn’t see any preservatives on the bottle. It stayed in the fridge but moved sadly to the bin. So more tryouts came until I was ready to make my own gels, hair masks, body creams, leave-in detanglers & conditioner bars.

Now I’m on the quest to make surfactant based hair cleansers that I can alternate with my clay masks. Shampoo bars are great, but require high amounts of surfactants & also therefore cost a lot when no water is added. Little did I know how much product you can make with just a few ingredients but lots of water. I’m enjoying the process and can’t wait to take you along with me and my obsessive hobby. šŸ˜† I promise it will be a rollercoaster, so don’t expect perfect formulations here. See it as inspiration to get out of your raw egg, banana & avocado hair mask vibes.

What’s your current hair doing?

Mine is doing fine & I cut it on blown out hair. I’ve been playing around with different oils, butters, emulsifying waxes & plant hydrosols to make diy conditioners, detanglers, gels & emulsified body butters for a couple of weeks.

And I can’t be happier thanks to Youtube University that can show you how to formulate and preserve your creams the proper way. I’ve been watching those videos for years. If you’re subscribed to the right channels and know how to use Youtube Search, you can learn so much!

šŸ˜‡ I’m still in an experimenting phase to see how stable things are and if it gives what I want on my hair & skin, especially when you’re not at home or you don’t use the formulation for a couple of days to come back, and see if it’s still the same. From what I can definitely say is that you save a lot of money because the amount that is required for your favourite oils, butters & humectants to create a batch is tiny.

Since my favourite botanical gels are very pricey & prices are getting high here in Europe, I don’t see the will power to continue buying them just because I can’t find alternatives that work on my hair type. Texture stability & smell plays a big role as well as compatibility with skin. If your diy products suddenly don’t work the same they did a couple of hours ago or the next day, there’s definitely something wrong.

Creating sensitivities is definitely a sign that something is also wrong, same when you use commercial products, so it’s best to identify the main cause & to carefully take at least some notes. Because your brain can’t retain everything. And to stop using what you are.

I love giving reviews for commercial products and have been buying my staples, but I’ve never been 100% satisfied when it especially comes to conditioners. I’m also craving a styling gel that is affordable and that can be a one styler curl defining gel. Why layering several products just to get the tightest curl types to hang a bit more stretched out?!

When I started my YouTube journey, I started with diy recipes and always wanted to provide you with a channel of diy & commercial products that really ā€˜works on 4c hair’. Because yes, I’m tired of seeing videos of (expensive) edible avocado masks with oils that can easily be substituted with other liquids, emulsifiers & avocado oil. I would rather eat my fresh avocados & bananas than to make a mask with it.

I was also able to finally purchase Tea Seed (Camelia) powder and will be able to create a more authentic fermented rice water!! Because I hope you know it’s Yao Women’s natural shampoo and not a leave-in or the magic solution to grow long hair. My next video about how I condition my hair is coming soon! xoxo

How tight are your curls? Mine are more than tight. Some like to refer it as coily. I like to call them micro corkscrew curls & zigzag waves & small sections of s-wave curls with a spring factor (shrinkage) of 80% according to the curly girl method handbook.

I don’t use the infamous Andrew Walker Hair Chart anymore to categorise my hair into 4c & b mainly with tiny sprinkles of 4a in the back. The Hair Chart isn’t flexible and doesn’t give justice to the multiple unique curl patterns and sizes you can find out there.

It’s also super frustrating to see others using those letters with curl pattern and curls size compared to the sun and the moon, when you look at your own hair. Everybody wants to be that 4c hair so badly, so go and get it. I hope my texture friends & family to find me with my videos and pictures even if I don’t use those letters as keywords in my titles anymore! šŸ™ŒšŸ¾
