Bonjour, we're coming to you from Normandy, France for episode 24! We're here after we realized pretty quickly that as much as we love the old buildings and architecture in Paris, those beautiful old buildings do not have the air conditioning us Americans are used to. Even trying to buy a fan felt like we were doing a drug deal. C'est la vie, let's do as the French do and get out of the city.
This brings us to discussing how, despite all this, we truly prefer the craftsmanship and style of European homes compared to new builds. The good news? We can now get that same 1800s craftsmanship at a much lower price point, with all the modern amenities we're not willing to give up, and we're taking notes for our own remodel. We share exciting news that we're headed to DIY Con in the fall, plus answer the question of whether we ever get sick of each other, since we spend the majority of our time together working side by side. Stay tuned for next week’s episode with Tess in Italy!
Episode 23 is OUT NOW, we’re coming to you from Tess’s garage! What should you do when someone crosses the line with an unsolicited comment? This week, we’re unpacking the wild things people feel entitled to say about women’s lives while sharing our own very strong opinions about the eyebrows of the room: curtains!
We’re also diving into whether you’re a tiger or a dragon in the bedroom based on which side of the bed you choose. And Joey’s plan to sleep on a camping mattress during our trip? Let’s just say it’s probably not the most feng shui-approved setup.
Episode 22 is one we’ve wanted to make for a long time. Nine years ago, we experienced our first miscarriage while we were at the height of our OMG We’re Coming Over series. We were smiling on camera every week while privately navigating one of the hardest chapters of our lives. After experiencing a second miscarriage, we searched for answers and realized just how common pregnancy loss is, and how little it’s talked about.
Today, we’re in a place where we can look back with gratitude and finally share our story, hoping it brings comfort to someone who needs it.
We also share Kate’s closet clean-out tips, meaningful ways to memorialize a pregnancy loss or loved one through art, Tess’s adventures in Europe, the importance of having a “third place,” and why she’s loving tandem reading Throne of Glass. Don’t worry, we’ll be taking a little vacation, but a brand new episode will be waiting for you next Tuesday.
New video! Stick out your tongue… it’s Episode 21! From cortisol-lowering hacks to grieving the loss of hobbies, we explore what happens when the thing you love becomes your career… and potentially your identity.
Kate shares how she brings new life to her hobbies, and doesn’t let perfection stop her from starting new ones. Joey reminds us that the loss of one hobby, like his drumming career just means there’s room for another.
Plus, Tess and Kate are using color analysis and capsule wardrobes to pack for their European summer adventures. Meanwhile, Joey’s creating some interesting invention ideas. Call us at 1-844-RUG-CHAT and give us some ideas for the podcast!
You’ve been asking when we are going to do another makeover video??? And that time is NOW! See how we took a store-bought closet kit and made it look custom for some much less $$$$ than it would have cost! We Made a Cheap Closet Kit Look EXPENSIVE (Full Closet Makeover) https://youtu.be/varijA0RrLA
NEW EPISODE: This episode is a girl's hypersensitive guide to living in a world that's stacked against your nervous system. For Kate, that looked like years of debilitating chronic migraines. After trying just about everything, in true Mr.Kate fashion, she made her own solution and is so excited to share her midnight stretching ritual with all of you on the Rug Cuddle Instagram.
And because overwhelm doesn't stop at the nervous system — you know that feeling when you open Pinterest for "just a little inspiration" and three hours later you're feeling overwhelmed, defeated, and somehow further from a decision than when you started? Dr. Kate has a prescription for that. It's called the Pinterest barf, and she walks you through her full step-by-step method for going from chaotic inspiration to a clear design direction without losing your mind.
And then there's Tess, navigating the equally overwhelming world of dating — and how she may have accidentally gotten a little drunk on her Hinge date and ended up inviting him in to meet her cat, who was he was starstruck by. Single ladies, have the cat men taken over your algorithm or is it just Tess? And more importantly — how do we get her a date with Harry from the Sidemen??
If you saw today’s episode about nervous system remodeling, https://youtu.be/sGUhvyRjSh0 I’m working on editing my crucial daily stretch routine now! I’ll link when it’s up!
NEW EPISODE: Warning: this one's a tearjerker. We open up about something that weighed heavy on us: motherhood costing us a business opportunity. Knowing this happens to women all the time is exactly why we choose to walk away. Which got us talking about how women have spent years trying to fit into systems made for men, when science is only just now catching up to how differently we're actually wired. And maybe the answer we're looking for can be found in bees?
We also share our survival tips for getting through the newborn stage, plus a delightfully whimsical creative spark that brings magic to an everyday task. Tess may have gotten dumped on the pod, but thanks to a friend hijacking her Hinge she's got a date with Fae — while Joey wishes it was at 711, he’ll settle for her agreeing not to mention that she’s currently reading a Peter Pan romantasy book.
NEW EPISODE: Joey kicks things off poking fun at Kate’s witchy era, but after an astrology reading hits a little too close to home, he’s suddenly shouting from the rooftops that after 7 years, he’s finally out of Uranus.
We also get into our experience trying elimination communication, aka “diaper witchcraft,” while potty training our newborn, Kate shares one of her favorite analog activities lately a digital version of a a disposable camera.
We laugh about Kate’s cameo in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement still following her everywhere online, including the completely unscripted accent behind her iconic line. Tess reveals a shocking DNF, and we spiral into the dream of creating a TV show where we remodel homes in all 50 states… Netflix call us! https://youtu.be/2ERLjlej7LI?si=s9Ned...
NEW EPISODE in which we push back on the status quo—from building a custom family bed to co-sleeping work, to Kate opening up about what she’s stopped doing to please society (like shaving) and fully embracing aging, to be an example for our daughter.
Tess might not have met her match from the podcast, but it did spark a fun night out with longtime friends—also single and ready to mingle—and led to a debate about “catching print”… which, surprisingly, has nothing to do with interior design.
We also share the books we think should be required reading for every adult—Joey picks Leadership and Self-Deception tinyurl.com/4khe83m4 and Kate goes with Brave New World amzn.to/3OD8gbN. On the other side of the spectrum, our dark romantsy latest obsession is Chrysalis by B.B Reid.
