this is the most proud we have been in a new record. it brings together everything that this project means to us.
the ability to create a haven to create. to conjure up wild concepts and bring them to reality. and to play, really play through the act of making music.
what’s funny is the name is what came about first. the concept came together through long conversations asking ourselves what the sugar machine is. Honestly, we just thought that name was cool, and wanted to build a concept around it the sugar machine is a sonic embodiment of the melancholy nostalgia that comes with growing older. It is a pursuit and celebration of child-like wonder, ignorance, and innocence. It is the grief that comes with the loss of ignorant, innocent bliss. It is one of the ways we have felt closest to our younger selves.
the sugar machine is any way that one finds themselves trying to access the younger, more carefree part of their past. From creating something to letting go of inhibition, we all use the sugar machine in some way. Through the sugar machine we try to access the awe of discovery that we can never hold again, a perspective that is temporally limited and a curiosity we yearn for.
the sugar is the element of innocent sweetness of the uneducated child, taking in all its surroundings, and utilizing the pure mind to imagine things beyond the adult’s wildest dreams.
the machine aspect comes into play as a construct that approaches things from an engineering or learned mindset that is more typical of adults, and sometimes that can hinder the free flowing creativity and imaginations of young children, where knowledge has not brought on limitation.
we chase the sugar, by creating the machine.
there was a village who made this record come to life. friends and wildly talented musicians all.
josh jacobson who played trombone and one of the most incredible piano improvs i have heard on “carousel”. ryan hunter with incredible synth work on “what does it sound like?” and “carousel”, along with warren trunz. blake dahlinger for being our incredibly talented live drummer, who played some parts on the record as well. cooper holzman for the iconic riff on “sunny eyes (anymore)” eric mascolo for helping figure out the lyrics and topline on “what does it sound like?” our super talented manager ardie farhadieh for some immaculate violin work on the outro of “youth (make it last), as well as carousel. ellis tucker for being my second set of ears when getting the mastering right, absolutely invaluable. and anton doty for the dolby atmos mixes of the record.
special thank you to brae hunziker for all the amazing collaborations on the videos, single/album arts, and short form content.
and finally to our families for supporting during the hectic creative process that is putting together a record. we love you.
please listen, share, laugh, cry, and find your sugar machine.
heartbeat video is out now. a special thanks to the community of La Independencia, Cerro de Campagna in Monterrey, MX. we recognize that the struggles and extreme hardship portrayed in this video are not ours to claim. we are grateful to the community in this video for allowing us to use our platform to show this story. watch the full video below and read our full statement about this video and how you can support the community of La Independencia, as well as communities like it at slenderbodi.es/causes-blog
tomorrow we release a music video for ‘heartbeat’. the video is deeply emotional, raw, beautiful, and ultimately gut-wrenching. diretor @savannahsetten brought us this story after hearing heartbeat, and filmed it in a neighborhood called La Indepencia, in the heart of Monterrey, MX. after receiving the final cut, our perspective was expanded regarding socio-political and economic issues in parts of the world that we are not familiar with. as two creators coming from a place of privilege, we deliberated on how we would share this. this is a content warning, this video contains violence, children living in extreme conditions, loss & grief. that being said, it is an extremely powerful exploration of the human condition. our hope is that this video will affect you as it has affected us. we hope it will inspire you to open your heart and eyes, ears to issues happening locally and globally. we hope you may consider donating to one of the charities we have included, or one of your choosing. we hope that you see the value of community, and strive for love and closeness in your own neighborhood, even amongst differences and hardship.
this is a special one 🥰🥰 our new album called “are we?” is on the horizon. this one is special for us, as it really took as back to our roots of writing and recording an album apart from each other. and in a time of isolation, this record is ironically the one with the most collaborations we’ve ever done in a single body of work. we cannot wait to share it with you AND dance with you! be ready ~ 5/21 ~
our new song heartbeat is out at midnight tonight! tune in at 8pm PT on IG live to hang with us, and post a pic of your presave now for a chance to hear it early! umusic.digital/blvvkg/
