FOUR PAWS

Did you know that a cow has to give birth to a calf in order to start producing milk ❔🐄 These calves are essentially by-products of the dairy industry 🐄🍼.

Often, the little ones are taken away from their mothers at a very early age. They are either left to die alone or sold and loaded onto a truck 💔. Sometimes they are far too young to use the drinkers on the truck, as they still have a strong sucking reflex and would need their mother’s milk 🐄.

Their first destination is a place where so-called “fattening” takes place. Most of these farms are in Spain, where the calves are fed low-quality food 🇪🇸. After this fattening period, they are transported once again, often by ship 🚢. Their final destination? Slaughter. Yes, you read that right.

The young cows have to stand in their own manure, and many of them die during the journey.

They are handled like cars at ports, not like living beings. You can see the fear in their eyes, and perhaps they still carry a small glimpse of hope, a hope that is crushed when they are forced to line up at their destination to meet their end.

Tag the European Parliament under this post on our other channels and let them know that you care about calves. Live animal transport has to end NOW.

Our bear Erich can hardly believe it - these days are finally starting to feel like spring after a very, very loooong winter at BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach in Austria. 🐻

Did you know you can visit our sanctuaries and catch a glimpse of the animals you’re supporting? 💚 Please remember that our animals can, of course, choose to hide or retreat if they don’t feel like seeing people - their wellbeing always comes first.

A bird has flown into your window – here’s how you can help 🆘
We and our OWL AND BIRDS OF PREY Rescue Station Haringsee often receive questions from people worried about stunned birds. In these situations, quick and correct action is crucial.

🐦 Is the bird disorientated, fluffed up, or breathing rapidly? Carefully place it in a small box with air holes. Do not give food or water, as stunned birds can easily drown. Keep the box in a quiet, dark place and monitor the bird. Once it becomes active and tries to get out, you can safely release it again.

🐦 If the bird still cannot fly after several hours or continues to appear badly stunned, it needs professional help. Please take it to a wildlife rescue centre – the experts there will know what to do.

🐦 Sometimes the impact is so severe that the bird suffers a serious head injury. In these cases, sadly, even a vet may not be able to help. Leave the bird calm and protected in the box, allowing it to pass away peacefully without the added stress of transport.

Of course, the best solution is prevention. To help stop birds from colliding with glass, we recommend frosted glass or visible markings such as dots, stripes, or grid patterns. The gaps between the markings should be no larger than 10–15 cm – roughly the size of a handprint. 💚

Leopard Bakari was once used as a photo prop, a victim of the cruel trade that treats sentient beings as tourist attractions. But the "perfect shot" isn't worth a life in captivity. 💔

This past #InternationalLeopardDay, we celebrated Bakari’s journey to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary and reminded the world that wild animals are #NotPhotoProps. 🐾

Right now, more than a million dogs and countless cats are stolen, trafficked and slaughtered for the dog and cat meat trade in Indonesia every year. 🇮🇩💔

But YOU have spoken up against this: thanks to your support, we were able to submit a petition to the Indonesian Embassies and consulates across the world, with an unbelievable 700,000 signatures.

As part of the Dog Meat Free Indonesia coalition, we're making sure decision-makers can't ignore our voices calling for a new bill to be passed! 🗳️

🆘 Free bear Tim, Mr. Rožmanec! 🐻

In an open letter we invited Mr. Rožmanec to visit BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach and see with his own eyes how the rescued bears Felix and Mici thrive in a species‑appropriate environment. Felix and Mici were given the chance to be rescued by FOUR PAWS from Slovenia last year and we continue to advocate for the relocation of bear Tim. Tim is suffering even if his keeping is in line with the Slovenian animal welfare law.

A few weeks ago, FOUR PAWS travelled to Slovenia to check on Tim. Sadly, we were denied entry by Mr. Rožmanec. Only wildlife veterinarian Dr. Johanna Painer‑Gigler was allowed a brief visual inspection.

Her conclusion is deeply concerning.
She confirms that Tim is suffering and that he should be relocated as soon as possible. Tim is showing stereotypic behaviours resulting from stress due to the very poor, unstimulated and very small enclosure. Tim is kept in poor husbandry, which does not even meet European minimum recommendations for the keeping of brown bears.

Our offer still stands: We can relocate bear Tim at any time and give him a new life at our beautiful BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach. But Mr Rožmanec doesn't want to give Tim up willingly. While bears Felix and Mici are thriving in their new and species-appropriate environment at BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach, bear Tim still remains in poor captivity in Slovenia. 💔

Mr. Rožmanec, we sincerely hope you will visit our sanctuary, see the difference for yourself, and make the right decision for Tim. Tim deserves better and BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach is the solution.

Please continue to support us ➡️ www.four-paws.org/campaigns-topics/campaigns/sadde…

Meet Benni, Our Little Fighter 🐿️

A few weeks ago, this tiny baby squirrel was found in Gänserndorf Süd, Austria, lying beside his mother who sadly didn’t survive. Thankfully, Benni himself was unharmed. The kind people who found him acted quickly and brought him straight to our OWL AND BIRDS OF PREY Rescue Station Haringsee where he’s now being lovingly cared for.

We believe that that Benni and his mum tragically fell from their nest. Squirrel mothers usually have several nests and move their babies if they feel unsafe but sadly, something must have gone wrong during that move.

The good news? Benni is doing really well. 💛 He has recovered quickly from the shock, is happily drinking his formula, and has even started to nibble on soft fruit as his first tiny teeth come in. 🍼
As soon as he starts climbing, he’ll move to a bigger enclosure where he can explore, build strength, and get ready for life back in the wild. 🌿

We’re rooting for you, Benni! ✨

🐱 Axl: The Tiny Ginger Who Refused to Give Up ✨

Before he even had a name, Axl had already beaten the odds once. Found alone at just ten days old, separated from his litter, he was brought to the FOUR PAWS Bankya clinic by the people who discovered him. 🇧🇬 When they returned to collect the rest of the family, it was already too late—Axl was the only survivor. 💔

At first, his own chances looked just as uncertain. He was smaller than the baby bottle we used to feed him. 🍼 For six long weeks, we didn’t know if he would make it. Axl struggled to take in enough food and showed delayed growth, remaining fragile and weak. We counted every millilitre he consumed, celebrated each small burst of energy, and worried over every sign of lethargy.

Just as he began to stabilise, a new challenge emerged — months of sensitive digestion that kept us constantly on edge.

Today, Axl is six months old: healthy, strong, and impossible to miss. With his ginger, fluffy coat—especially that tail—and pointed ears tipped with delicate tufts, he makes a striking impression at first glance.

Now, he’s ready for the next chapter. Soon, we’ll begin the search for his forever home. 🏡

Tulips are widely admired for their vibrant colours and are celebrated around the world 🌷. During springtime tulip festivals attract large numbers of visitors plus tulips and are often displayed in gardens, parks, and public spaces.

However, all parts of the tulip are toxic to dogs, with the highest concentration of toxins found in the bulb. In severe cases, especially following the ingestion of larger quantities such as bulbs, tulip poisoning may cause systemic effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and can be life threatening to dogs‼️.

This risk is particularly high for smaller dogs, as even small amounts can have serious effects 🐕.

🆘 Emergency rescue at TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary 🦊

The onsite team received an urgent call from Rhein Neckar Animal Rescue about a young fox in desperate condition. The little one was barely recognizable, covered in mud, completely soaked, and severely undernourished.

Acting fast, the rescue team searched for a place where the fox could receive expert care. While arrangements were made, the finders carefully removed most of the mud from its fur, giving the exhausted animal its first bit of relief.

After a tough journey and a battle against the elements, the fox arrived at our sanctuary utterly worn out. Throughout the night, our team kept a close watch. 💚

Then, in the early morning hours, a hopeful sign: the fox’s condition began to improve and it started to bark.

We wish this little survivor a speedy recovery.
