It’s been one year since Brittany Ferries backtracked on its commitment to animals and announced that it will resume transporting unweaned calves and other live animals from Ireland to France.

This cruel and outdated practice. Over the past year, the public outcry has been clear - customers, citizens, and employees alike want this trade to end. Yet Brittany Ferries chose profit over compassion, continuing this line of business despite widespread opposition 💔.

#TwoBearsOneFuture – Gordo and Florencia have finally made it! 🐻🌍🐻

A journey measured in kilometres.
A future measured in dignity. ✨

We’re delighted to share that both bears have now successfully and safely arrived in Bulgaria, leaving behind their former lives at the former Zoo Luján in Argentina. After landing in Sofia, the FOUR PAWS team was already waiting to welcome them! Besides Dr Amir Khalil, who accompanied the bears directly, and Dr Marina Ivanova, who also travelled to Bulgaria, members of the board Josef Pfabigan (CEO) and Luciana D’Abramo (CPO) also made the journey to welcome the bears and celebrate this huge step!

Once it was ensured the animals were healthy and ready for the final step of the trip, the bears and the team left to their new home at our BEAR SANCTUARY Belitsa (@bearsanctuary.belitsa). 🩺🚛

Both bears spent most of their lives in conditions that could never meet their needs. Confined and without meaningful stimulation, they were denied the chance to truly live as bears. 💔 That changes now! Both bears are now kept in individual quarantine enclosures with indoor and outdoor access but will stay indoors for the next two days to properly adapt to the new environment and climate. ❄️ After their initial quarantine period, they will get the chance to explore spacious natural enclosures, breathe in the mountain air, and - soon - properly experience nature for the very first time. ️🌳

Now, at last, they will enjoy a proper bear life in a species-appropriate sanctuary with dedicated caretakers, and we couldn’t be more excited for them. 💕

Shocking news from Slovenia – Zoo park Rožman receives its license to exhibit Tim 💔

Unfortunately, we do not have good news from Slovenia today. 🇸🇮

According to our information, Zoo park Rožman, which has kept bear Tim in poor conditions since he was a cub, has received a new license to reopen to visitors. After the ministry rightly refused to issue Mr. Rožmanec a new license in 2024 and the zoo had to be closed to visitors for several months, Mr. Rožmanec is now officially allowed to put Tim on display again. 🐻💔

We are shocked by this decision, as it is incomprehensible from an animal welfare perspective. While we respect the court's ruling, keeping Tim at Zoo park Rožman is and remains inappropriate!

We can guarantee Tim the best possible care, provide him with medical treatment, and allow him to live in an environment appropriate to his species. At BÄRENWALD Arbesbach, a 3,500 m² natural enclosure is ready and waiting for him. Can Mr. Rožmanec offer Tim the same?

#FloraToFELIDA 🐅🧡: We did it — together! Welcome, Flora! ✨
With your incredible support, we made this possible. Tigress Flora arrived safe and sound at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, where part of the FELIDA team, including our vet Sandra, was waiting to welcome her. 🛬

Sandra carried out a quick visual assessment. Flora was calm in her crate, just tired from the long flight. 💤 With the big cat ambulance ready, Flora and the team travelled on to her final destination — her new forever home: FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary. 🚑🌿

Flora was gently released into her adaptation enclosure. Although tired from the journey, she was wonderfully curious — a character trait she had already shown in Argentina. 👀 Within moments, she began exploring her surroundings.

It was pure joy to watch this small tigress discover both her indoor and outdoor areas, exploring every element of her new home. She climbed onto her platform, stretched her claws against a tree, accepted food from her caregivers, and even made herself comfortable in her bed of straw. 🌿
We couldn’t have wished for more.

When we first met Flora last year, she was forced to endure life in a 2 x 2 metre enclosure, suffering from severely ingrown claws. 💔 The pain was so intense that she could barely stand or walk. Looking back at those images now, we are incredibly proud and deeply moved by how far this brave tigress has come.

💝 A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this life-changing rescue possible!

Punch deserves much more than a plush toy. 💔

What we see in those photos and videos isn't just about a young monkey trying to fit in, but about a whole troop of intelligent animals trying to cope with their keeping conditions.

Whilst being a highly hierarchical species, and thus making the reintroduction of a young one in a group difficult, we can't help but notice the lack of green, shade and enrichment that would allow Punch and all the others to thrive in a species-appropriate environment... Did you know that wild macaques in Japan could even be found bathing in hot springs? 🌳💦

And whilst Punch's story moves people all over the world, crowds are visiting the zoo trying to get a glimpse of the monkey and his plush toy. Please think before sharing all these "cute" photos and viral videos, as the attention it gets online can increase stress for the animals on site. 📸❌

📢 IT’S HAPPENING: Gordo, Florencia & Flora are on their way to a new beginning! 🐾✈️

Their rescue is officially underway. After months of preparation, logistical hurdles, building relationships and crate training in Argentina, the two bears and tigress Flora have safely entered their specially built transport crates and are now on planes bound for their forever homes at BEAR SANCTUARY Belitsa in Bulgaria and FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands. We’re grateful for the support of the Ministry of Environment, the Municipality of Luján and all other stakeholders to help us make this happen!

This historic journey marks a milestone: when Gordo and Florencia land, they will become the first bears ever flown from South America to Sofia Airport. A powerful symbol of how far their story has come! 💙

We cannot wait for what’s in store for these three unique animals:

🍇 Florencia is bold, expressive and never stopped demanding grapes and attention. She is more than ready for her new chapter.

🐻 Gordo, gentle and affectionate as always, trusted the team every step of the way. His calm strength has made this transition smoother than anyone could have hoped.

🐅 Flora, shy but deeply curious, is on her way to the lifelong safety, expert rehabilitation and medical care she deserves after living in pain for a long time.

This is not the end of their story - it’s the beginning of healing, dignity, and species-appropriate care! While these are the most urgent cases to leave the former Zoo Luján as there was no possibility of appropriate care locally, we continue to look for long-term solutions for all the remaining animals both within and outside of Argentina.

Today, voices for animals were impossible to ignore. ️💔

In Brussels, EU Agriculture Ministers met ahead of the European Commission’s expected March 2026 response to the #FurFreeEurope European Citizens’ Initiative. 🏛️

Outside the Commission’s main building, animal welfare activists held a peaceful rally calling for an EU-wide ban on fur farming and the fur trade! 🚫🦊

The action - organised by the Fur Free Alliance which FOUR PAWS is also a part of - featured mobile LED screens, banners and short public speeches. 📢 Members of the European Parliament and representatives from animal welfare organisations were also present. 🤝

The mobilisation follows the 2023 European Citizens’ Initiative, an official EU tool that allows citizens to request new laws, which gathered 1.5 million verified signatures in support of a ban. 🖊️📄

Now, all eyes turn to March 2026, when the European Commission will reveal its next steps. This is more than a policy decision — it’s a test of Europe's compassion.

Do you remember little Dori? 🐻💛

Almost one year old now, this tiny cub-turned-charming-young-bear is growing so fast at BEAR SANCTUARY Prishtina! 🌲

Let’s rewind to March 2025. 📆

A small, vulnerable bear cub arrived at our sanctuary without warning. According to the given information, Dori had been taken from the wild in Albania and was being illegally offered for sale on social media. Thankfully, he was confiscated and safely brought to our sanctuary in Kosovo, where our team immediately began coordinating with both Kosovan and Albanian authorities to find the best path forward. 🌳

With no suitable long-term care facilities available in either country, BEAR SANCTUARY Prishtina opened its doors to give Dori the permanent, loving home he deserves.

Since day one, this little sweetheart has been unstoppable — climbing, rolling, exploring, and embracing every enrichment activity we prepare for him. And last week, he got an extra special surprise:

A heart shaped wreath packed with his favourite treats! 💚🍎

Dori had the best time sniffing, tasting, and discovering every delicious detail. Watching him enjoy himself with such pure joy was absolutely heart melting.
Here’s to watching Dori grow and continue his beautiful journey with us. 💛🐻
