It's that time of year!!! It's the State Fair of Texas time!!

In 1899 the organization changed its name to Texas State Fair. The fair had financial difficulties even before 1902, when the exposition buildings burned. Furthermore, it lost its biggest source of income when the Texas legislature outlawed track gambling on horse racing. Still the directors refused an offer of $125,000 for the fairgrounds, which would have turned the site into a residential subdivision.

Wednesday, Oct. 11, was declared to be, and is to be, a full, free and public holiday within the corporate limits of our good city of Dallas, on account of Dallas Day at the Great Texas State Fair.

All business, public and private, the post office, the courts, the banks, and public schools, will close from Tuesday evening, Oct. 10, until Thursday morning, Oct. 12, to the end that all may turn out and have one full day’s benefit of this great educational institution.

Every employer in Dallas is charged to be loyal to this, our proclamation, for his own good, for the good of those he employs, for the good of their wives and families and of their sweethearts.

No loyal concern in Dallas will fail to observe this, our annual holiday, or fail to render to their employees every facility for observing it.

Every citizen of Dallas having in his possession a complimentary ticket to the Fair is hereby requested to keep his ticket in his pocket and to pay his way at the gate. Children in arms will be admitted to the Fair free. School children, accompanied by their teachers, at half price.

Did you know in 1899 the Grand Pageant of the Grand Orders of the Kaliphs was set up by liquor wholesaler Charles Mangold. According to Nancy Wiley in her book, The Great State Fair of Texas, the event “had been organized to present a gala civic entertainment along Mardi Gras lines. The three-day program would take place during the fair and include a welcome for the ceremonial Kaliph of Baghdad, a nighttime parade of illuminated floats through downtown and a grand ball that promised to rival any existing social event in the state.

This Dallas Fire Station opened in 1894 and was operational until 1928. The city ordered the building sold in 1928 when plans had been made to move personnel and equipment from McKinney and Leonard to a new station at Ross and Leonard.

This particular build was remodeled. By 1909, automobiles were placing horse-drawn fire engines, one of many reasons the station house needed to be modernized. Newspaper articles from 1909/1910 used the words “rebuilt” and “remodeled” almost interchangeably, so it’s unclear whether the original building was completely, or only partially demolished and then rebuilt, using materials from the original structure. The “new” engine house re-opened in January, 1910.

We put together some clippings of HOT news from the year of 1922 within the Carrollton Chronicle.

Yes, young folks, this was the way the masses received the latest news. This was the 1922 version of the mighty internet. Even then, people were using this media outlet for slander & gossip. In the year of 1912, many post were made regarding elections! Hey, not much has changed there. Thank the Lord we are not in the year of 1922. In that year we would not have been able to enjoy a nice cool beverage within 3 Nations! It was illegal to manufacture, transport and sell intoxicating liquors!!!

In 1922, those who were running for office and active members of the KKK, were be outed by the questions they were receiving in their candidate forums.

We also found out that Mr and Mrs A.T. Stewart moved into their house on 1501 Maryland in this year. Here is another fact, that particular house is most likely the third oldest standing house in Carrollton Heights. The two that are older are the Boatwright/Vintage House and the other is located on 1101 Jackson.
Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD was searching for strong superintendent and a professional cook for the upcoming 22-23 school year.

The most AMUSING story in this 1922 edition of the Carrollton Chronicle is the bird that is for sale. This ad was run for nearly 7 weeks straight! This particular cock must have been something else!!

Flashback Friday!!!
Receipt for a normal baby delivery in 1947. This was in St. Paul's Hospital in Dallas, Texas for eight days with the baby and one day with the mother in labor. The total was for NINE days. WOW! Moms, could you imagine staying in the hospital after giving birth for EIGHT days!?! What an awesome break and help with a newborn.
We also did a 2024 mock up total for the same services, and same length of stay. THESE ARE APPROXIMATE prices. This amount is only a guess. We found these estimates from turquoise.health. This is for a vaginal delivery at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. The costs for two days are approximately $37,989.58. UT Southwestern offers a variety of labor and delivery services, including private suites, birthing options, and 24/7 care. There are cash discounts available to those paying in cash and without insurance.
If time travel was available today, moms would be going back to these unbelievable prices!
Families in the United States had an average (median) income of $3,000 in 1947, according to estimates issued today by J. C. Capt, Director, Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce.
The United States minimum wage in 1947 was $0.65 $0.45. Therefore, these parents most likely paid half of their monthly salary for the birth of their child.

Texas Flashback

The Majestic in Dallas, Texas is 103 years old. The Majestic Theater is the sole survivor of a section of Elm Street that was once renowned as Dallas' "Theater Row." the Majestic is actually the second theater by that name, the first being a vaudeville house built in 1905 at Commerce and St. Paul.
1921:
The Majestic Theater opened on Elm Street in downtown Dallas on April 21, 1921. Originally designed by architect John Eberson as a vaudeville theater, The Majestic hosted entertainment that featured comedy and dance acts, magicians, acrobats and even trained animals. Harry Houdini often performed at the theater in its early days.
1932:
In the early 1930s, the Majestic Theater's owner, Karl Hoblitzelle, began showcasing the next generation of entertainment media: movies.
1977-1983:
Four years after it showed its last film, the Majestic Theater became the first building in Dallas to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Later on, other buildings such as the former Texas Schoolbook Depository, now known as the Sixth Floor Museum, were also listed.
The Majestic Theater reopened to host musicals and other stage productions such as concerts.
Some of the better-known performers who appeared on its stage were Milton Berle, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Bob Hope, Ray Bolger, Sally Rand, Duke Ellington and even Barney the Dinosaur. During its early years the elaborately-decorated Majestic boasted a full orchestra pit and a downstairs play area for children called "Majesticland." In the 1930s the vaudeville acts were dropped and for many years only movies were shown here. Today the Majestic is a live theater venue only.
2014:
Talk show host Conan O’Brien brought his TBS show, Conan, to Dallas in hopes to increase interest in the basic cable’s big NBA All-Star game
