TALE: Nohkalikai Falls, meaning "Jump of Ka Likai" in the Khasi language, is the tallest plunge waterfall in India, located near Cherrapunji (Sohra) in Meghalaya, and is known for its 340-meter (1,115 ft) drop.
The tragic tale behind Nohkalikai Falls in Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, India, tells of a woman named Likai who, after unknowingly eating her own child, jumped off the cliff into the falls, hence the name "Nohkalikai" meaning "Jump of Ka Likai".
The Setup:
Likai, a young widow, lived in a village near the falls with her daughter.
Remarriage:
After her husband's death, she remarried, hoping her new husband would care for her daughter.
Jealousy and Murder:
However, her new husband became jealous of the attention she gave her child and, one day, killed the child and cooked part of it, unknowingly serving it to Likai.
The Revelation:
Upon returning home, Likai unknowingly ate the meal and later discovered the horrific truth, realizing her husband had killed her daughter.
Despair and the Jump:
Driven by grief and despair, Likai jumped off the cliff into the falls, giving the waterfall its name, "Nohkalikai".
Folklore:
The legend of Likai is a haunting reminder of the tragedy and is deeply ingrained in the local Khasi folklore.
