YouTube is an insane platform because it’s not a platform for adults because most forms of “nsfw”are banned and it has historically been harsh on things like swearing and dark humor, but it’s not a platform for children due to regulations on advertising and data collection resulting in actual children’s content being suppressed. And now they’re trying to implement a system where the platform guesses your age based on what you watch using god knows what metric. It just makes this website feel like it’s hostile to everyone.

AI chatbots like Faustian demons it’s almost comical. They claim to solve the problems of their users, yet constantly cop out or give faulty information, seeking their guidance comes at a great (environmental) cost, and everyone who relies on them loses their grip on reality.

I’ve been on ttrpg YouTube a lot lately and I’ve become quite intrigued by the discourse around daggerheart, or more accurately, the concerning amount of people who think it’s going to overtake DnD in popularity.

“Daggerheart is better designed than dnd” most games are “Hasbro mismanaged the brand” the average person does not care “Jeremy Crawford joined the Daggerheart design team” the average person does not know who that is “Critical Role is the biggest actual play show” DnD had half a century to build brand recognition

I’m not rooting against the game. I actually think it’s good for the scene when more games get big. It’s just that everybody online who talks about it seems convinced that every DnD player is just as aware and invested in the behind the scenes drama as them and will just jump ship on a whim.

The commentary community is doomed to cannibalize itself and the whole "slop" discourse is just further proof to me. None of these people had anything to say about these "slop" commentary channels when they were seen has cool and edgy, but since they became popular targets now all of these new YouTubers have come out of obscurity to separate real from fake and be bastions of originality and authenticity. And of course, of you look at their other videos, it's all just the same popular subject matter that very other commentary channel is talking about. It's all just this eternal cycle of edgelord criticizes popular thing, gets popular, becomes over exposed, and then get criticized by a fresher, edgier new guy who the general public hasn't become annoyed with. "This guy is washed up, that'll never be me. I'll sustain a career off of being embracive and combative forever!"

If you're looking for a good horror movie for halloween, don't watch "Cape Fear" 1991. It's scary, but not in that way.

Watched it with a friend and wasn't the vibe we were looking for.

YouTube hot tip: whenever you're talking about a genre you don't know much about, you might be tempted to admit that you're ignorant on the subject and move on to the bulk of the video. Don't do that, instead, give a prolonged rant about the genre is bad actually based on the only five entries you've seen. This will make you look more credible to your audience has they will be impressed by your ability to critique entire decades worth of media and will have the bonus of padding out the length of the video with more of your irreplaceable wisdom.

Way too often I'll see a video that's like "this genre sucks" and it's a made up genre that essentially means "bad music/movies/etc". Like, sure, this new genre where the only commonality between the works is that they're personally annoying to you is something the entire world needs to know about. Upload that video essay prompto!

I think the most popular example of this is the term "grimdark" where barring its usage in very niche communities, is almost exclusively used as an insult. And when those people try to "analyze" the genre they get confused at how contradictory it is and I'm like "yeah, because you just give the label to everything you don't like."
