On September 5 2025, Mr. Tan Dib Jin (陈立人), grandson of the distinguished patriotic overseas Chinese leader Tan Kah Kee (陈嘉庚), together with his great-grandson Daryl Tan (陈铭), visited Ao Yuan in Jimei, Xiamen. They respectfully presented a commemorative medal marking the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression at Tan Kah Kee (陈嘉庚)’s gravesite and laid flowers in tribute.
Throughout his life, Tan Kah Kee (陈嘉庚) devoted substantial personal resources to advancing education and setting new standards for educational development. He raised significant funds, mobilized members of the Nanyang volunteer drivers and mechanics corps, and gave unwavering support to China’s resistance efforts, becoming a prominent figure in the united front against aggression.
In an interview with China News Service, Mr. Tan Dib Jin remarked that the commemorative medal represents renewed recognition of his grandfather Tan Kah Kee (陈嘉庚)’s contributions, as well as those of the Nanyang volunteers. During the visit, Daryl Tan also shared that he will lead a delegation of overseas business representatives to participate in the 25th China International Fair for Investment and Trade. He noted that his great-grandfather had actively facilitated overseas investment and talent recruitment to support the development of Xiamen and other regions, and expressed his hope to carry forward and uphold the “Tan Kah Kee spirit.”
As Tan Kah Kee (陈嘉庚)’s hometown, Xiamen promulgated and implemented in October 2024 China’s first local government regulation dedicated to the protection of educational heritage, titled the “Xiamen Tan Kah Kee Educational Heritage Protection Measures.” This year, the Tan Kah Kee educational heritage has been included on China’s tentative list for World Cultural Heritage status. Mr. Tan Dib Jin expressed his deep gratification and high expectations regarding this development.
