Most people think you can “catch up” on sleep later…

But sleep experts say there’s actually a smarter way: preparing your body BEFORE exhaustion hits.

It’s called “sleep banking.”

Doctors working long hospital shifts have started using this method to reduce burnout and stay mentally sharp during stressful weeks.

Here’s how it works:

✔ A few days before a busy or exhausting period, go to bed just 15–20 minutes earlier each night
✔ Keep waking up at the same time every morning
✔ Give your brain extra recovery BEFORE sleep deprivation begins

Researchers say this can improve alertness, reaction time, focus… and help your body handle stress better.

But there’s an important warning:

Sleep banking is NOT a replacement for healthy sleep.

You can’t truly “store” sleep forever — you’re simply reducing future sleep debt before your body becomes overwhelmed.

And if you struggle with insomnia, experts say forcing yourself to stay in bed longer may actually make sleep anxiety worse.

One sleep doctor shared something powerful:

“We go, go, go all day… then expect the brain to instantly shut off at bedtime. Most brains don’t work that way.”

That’s why a proper wind-down routine matters more after 50 than most people realize.

Dim the lights.
Turn off the TV earlier.
Put the phone away.
Let your brain slow down before your body tries to sleep.

Sometimes better sleep doesn’t start at bedtime…

It starts an hour before.

Have you ever tried sleeping earlier BEFORE a stressful week or long trip? Did it help?
