SKIP IF YOURE UNCOMFORTABLE

Today, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has grown even more severe, with no clear end in sight despite international diplomatic efforts. The U.S., Egypt, and Qatar have proposed a new 60-day ceasefire plan, which Israel has reportedly accepted. The plan includes the phased exchange of hostages and remains under review by Hamas. However, Hamas has emphasized that any agreement must not be temporary—it must lead to a permanent end to the war. While these negotiations continue behind closed doors, the situation on the ground tells a very different story: Gaza is still being bombarded relentlessly, and civilians continue to pay the price. In just the past 24 hours, over 100 Palestinians have reportedly been killed in Israeli airstrikes. In retaliation, armed groups in Gaza have launched rocket attacks into Israel, keeping the cycle of violence alive.

Meanwhile, the suffering of Gaza’s population continues to intensify. The region is in the grip of a brutal summer heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 30°C. For the people of Gaza, surviving the heat is more than just uncomfortable—it’s life-threatening. The majority of the region’s clean water systems are no longer functioning. Only about 40% of water production is still active, and sanitation infrastructure is collapsing, leading to fears of widespread disease outbreaks. Hospitals are overwhelmed and under-equipped: only 17 out of 36 medical facilities are partially operational, and many of those are barely able to treat even the most basic injuries.

Aid distribution, which should be a lifeline for the people of Gaza, has also turned into a site of fear and violence. Reports have emerged that U.S.-subcontracted security forces—tasked with guarding aid delivery points—are using live ammunition, stun grenades, and pepper spray against desperate civilians trying to access food and water. These allegations, backed by eyewitness accounts and humanitarian workers, have sparked outrage. Amnesty International has condemned the situation, warning that restricting aid and violently suppressing civilians at food lines may constitute a war crime and could be considered part of a broader effort to use starvation as a weapon of war against Palestinians.

Amid all this devastation, one of the most heartbreaking moments came with the death of Dr. Marwan al-Sultan, the director of the Indonesia Hospital in Gaza. On July 2, an Israeli airstrike targeted his family home in Tal al-Hawa, a neighborhood southwest of Gaza City. Dr. Marwan, along with his wife and children, was killed instantly. This attack did not occur on a military site—it struck a civilian home, killing a respected doctor and his loved ones. Dr. Marwan was known not only for his leadership at one of Gaza’s most important medical facilities but also for his dedication to treating the wounded in the midst of war. His death has sent shockwaves through both Gaza and the international community. The Palestinian Ministry of Health called it a "heinous crime," and Indonesia's Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack, calling for international accountability and protection for medical personnel.

The loss of Dr. Marwan has come to symbolize the wider tragedy of Gaza’s health sector, which has been decimated by the war. Medical workers are being killed, hospitals are under attack, and patients—many of them children—are dying not only from injuries but from lack of treatment, medicine, and clean water. The continued targeting of civilians and essential infrastructure has led to renewed calls from humanitarian groups, including the World Health Organization and the United Nations, for an immediate ceasefire and unfettered access to aid.

As the war enters its ninth month, many in Gaza feel the world has turned its back on them. The ceasefire proposal offers a glimmer of hope, but for the people living under constant bombardment, hope feels distant. Each day brings more funerals, more children pulled from rubble, and more families destroyed. The death of Dr. Marwan al-Sultan is not just the loss of one man—it is the death of a symbol of resilience, of a system meant to heal, in a place that desperately needs healing.

The world watches, negotiates, and debates—but in Gaza, the bombs keep falling.
