Slow Roads, Real Rides.
We’re David and Dalma — a musician and a lawyer who keep swapping the desk for the saddle. Our bikes aren’t the biggest or the flashiest, but they get us where the maps thin out and the stories begin.
From Himalayan donkeys to backroad philosophy, we chase rides that leave mud on the boots and questions in your head. Sometimes it’s range tests and gear fixes, sometimes it’s the kind of road that makes you rethink how fast life should go.
If you’re after polished brochures and corporate hype, this isn’t it. But if you want honest miles, crooked roads, and a bit of stillness found in motion — pull up a chair.

Super thanks to everyone who commented on the Riding Alone video. I don't think I've ever been so busy replying to people. I do try to get to everyone, but it's taken me a bit longer this week. So my apologies if it's been a few days.
In another story, this week I was filming by the side of the road for this week's video, and a tradie rode past, wound down his window and yelled ... well ... let's just say it was a very Australian insult that sort of rhymes/looks like "rooster". Ruined the take because I was laughing so much.
Anyway, sorry again for the time it's taken to get back to you all.

Just thinking about what I took away from all the comments on this week's video. Thanks for the comments. I learn stuff from what you all say. It's one of the good things about doing this. I think this video was me working out some stuff about my riding.
Firstly, neither solo riding or group riding should be a trap. I don't mandate that I **have** to ride alone, or that I **have** to ride with other people. Hell, I ride with Dalma, which I guess is a sort of group ride. I'm probably careful with who I ride with, and that's ok.
But the capacity to ride alone and be comfortable with your own company is liberating. You're not dependent on other people's availability or schedules or riding processes. Or level of preparedness. Or grumpiness. Or even just someone being an arsehole. The lockdowns around COVID wrecked marriages because you were locked in with someone in an intense situation for a long period. I reckon there's a similarity with riding.
The other thing is that a lot of people ride somewhere, meet friends for lunch, and then ride off on their own again. That's actually quite freeing.
Thanks for the thinky and reflective feedback.
Now I'm riding home from my Mum's. 300km today on some pretty roads rather than burning up the freeway. She had some computer issues that needed fixing. Joys of elderly parents, eh?

Interesting things are happening in *India*. The government launched E85 recently. You heard that right. 85% ethanol, 15% petrol. The catch is that it only works in fuel-flex vehicles, of which there are ... essentially ... zero on the roads. This follows the quiet shelving of E5 and E10, making E20 the only option. And now they've just issued standards for E22, E25, E27 and E30.
What this will mean for existing motorcycles in India, I do not know. Carbureted bikes, the majority of two-wheelers, degrade significantly. Even EFI bikes can suffer damage. Not sure I'd want to run my Himalayan 411 on E20.
And so far, no one from the government is talking about it. Just mandating it.
And here's the thing: the Indian motorcycle culture is huge and passionate. I've got friends there that are keener on bikes than just about anyone I know. Wishing you all the best, Indian riders, as you navigate this mess.

Today, some good news and some bad news.
First, the good news. Motorcycling is awesome! I guess many of you already know that. This photo was taken last weekend when I went riding the Old Pacific Highway north of Sydney with my 15yo. Always good to get some dad/kid time. Not sure how much longer I can call him that.
Now the bad news, I've been battling a flu in the latter half of the week. That, combined with dealing with family crises early in the week, means the video I'd planned for this week is only half-finished. So it'll go up next weekend.
I have been doing some *One Minute Motophilosophy* videos. Short bites of motorcycle philosophy, in addition to the main videos. There are a couple up and more scheduled for this week.
Until next week, ride safe. 😊

Hi everyone. Just to let you know, there won't be the usual Sunday video this week. I did try, but technology failing, along with a super-busy week, foiled me. Back to your regularly scheduled viewing next Sunday. Have a great one.

An old friend sent me this image. 1991. Young me and my first bike. A 1981 Kawasaki Z250A. Lasted a year on it, then fell off a postie bike on a farm and broke my collarbone. Had to take two months off playing piano, which you kind of need two functioning arms for. Still, never quite forgot the bike.
