A few days ago, several major K-pop groups, including Stray Kids, BTS, ENHYPEN, TXT, aespa, ITZY, and IVE, attended an event organized by W Korea. The purpose of this event was to spread awareness about breast cancer and to support the cause through charity. However, what unfolded was far from what many of us expected or hoped for.
There was no visible sign of pink — the symbolic color of breast cancer awareness. Many idols seemed to treat the event like a party, drinking and playing inappropriate songs that had nothing to do with the cause. Instead of promoting awareness, the atmosphere felt careless and disrespectful to the very reason they were invited. Even the actors and actresses present didn’t seem to use the opportunity to speak up or show support for breast cancer awareness.
As someone who has supported these groups for years, this was deeply disappointing. I’ve always admired BTS for their messages of hope and encouragement. TXT was one of the first groups I ever stanned, and Stray Kids used to make me laugh and brighten my days. ENHYPEN members — especially Jake, Sunghoon, and Jungwon — have always been among my favorites. But seeing all of this has left me feeling hurt and disillusioned.
I understand that some people are saying the idols might not have known the event’s purpose, but at some point, that excuse just doesn’t hold up anymore. If you’re attending an event meant to raise awareness for something as serious as breast cancer, the least anyone could do is acknowledge it or show a bit of sincerity.
I used to defend idols passionately, but lately, it feels like the industry — and maybe even the people in it — have lost touch with what truly matters: humanity, empathy, and awareness.
To the people affected by breast cancer, I want to apologize on behalf of those who failed to represent your struggles with the respect and care you deserve. You matter — and even if the event didn’t reflect that, there are still people like me who genuinely care and will continue to stand with you.
Even if I ever listen to these groups again in the future, I don’t think I’ll ever truly forgive them for this. They had a chance to do something meaningful — and they didn’t. (cr:@Rosiesdayy )
