On 3 November 1947, in the snowy heights of Badgam, Kashmir, one man stood between Srinagar and the enemy.
Major Somnath Sharma, the first recipient of India’s highest gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra, displayed unmatched courage during the Indo-Pak War of 1947–48.
Despite having his arm in a plaster cast, he refused to stay back. Outnumbered and surrounded, he motivated his men of 4 Kumaon and held his ground till his last breath.
His final message still echoes in history:
"The enemy are only 50 yards from us. We are heavily outnumbered. We are under devastating fire… I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to the last man and the last round."
He made the supreme sacrifice so that Srinagar could be saved.
His bravery laid the foundation of a legacy that inspires every Indian soldier today.
