The Importance of a Single Thought: A Tale of Mulla Nasruddin

One afternoon, Mulla Nasruddin was walking through the marketplace when he noticed a group of people arguing loudly.

Everyone had an opinion.

One man blamed bad luck.

Another blamed the government.

A third blamed his neighbors.

The argument continued for hours, but no one offered a solution.

Mulla quietly picked up a tiny seed lying on the ground and held it up for everyone to see.

"What do you see?" he asked.

"A seed," they replied.

Mulla smiled.

"Inside this tiny seed is a mighty tree that can provide shade, fruit, and shelter for generations. But if it remains only a seed, it is worth almost nothing."

The crowd became silent.

Mulla continued,

"The same is true of your thoughts. One good idea, followed by action, can change your life. But thousands of ideas that never leave your mind are no more useful than a seed left on a shelf."

One young man stepped forward and asked,

"So what should we do?"

Mulla answered,

"Plant one thought. Water it with effort. Protect it with patience. Soon, others will sit in the shade of your success."

The crowd dispersed, each person deep in thought.

From that day on, many stopped complaining and started building.

Some learned new skills.

Some started businesses.

Some helped their communities.

And they all remembered the wisdom of a single seed.

Story post: Mulla Nasruddin and the Emperor's Dinner Invitation

One day, the emperor announced a grand dinner at his magnificent palace. Important ministers, wealthy merchants, scholars, and respected guests from across the kingdom were invited.

Mulla Nasruddin also received an invitation.

On the evening of the feast, Mulla arrived wearing his old, simple clothes. As he approached the palace gate, the guards looked at his worn-out robe and dusty shoes.

"Move aside," one guard said. "This dinner is only for important people."

"But I have an invitation," Mulla replied politely.

The guards laughed. "Someone dressed like you couldn't possibly be an honored guest."

Feeling disappointed but not angry, Mulla quietly returned home.

He changed into his finest silk robe, wrapped an elegant turban around his head, and wore polished shoes. When he returned to the palace, the same guards immediately bowed before him.

"Welcome, sir!" they said respectfully. "Please come inside."

Mulla smiled but said nothing.

Inside the grand dining hall, tables overflowed with delicious food. Servants rushed to serve every guest. When Mulla's turn came, instead of eating, he dipped the sleeve of his expensive robe into a bowl of soup.

"Eat, my robe!" he said.

Then he dipped the other sleeve into a plate of rice.

"Come on, robe! Enjoy the feast."

The entire hall fell silent.

The emperor, surprised, walked over and asked, "Mulla, what are you doing?"

Mulla looked at him calmly and replied,

"Your Majesty, when I came wearing my ordinary clothes, I was turned away despite having your invitation. But when I returned wearing expensive clothes, everyone welcomed me with great respect. It seems this dinner is for my robe, not for me. So I am feeding the robe."

The emperor realized the truth immediately. He apologized to Mulla and instructed everyone in the palace:

"Never judge a person by their appearance. Respect should be earned by character, wisdom, and kindness—not by clothing."

From that day forward, every guest was welcomed with dignity, regardless of how they were dressed.

**Moral:** Never judge people by their appearance. A person's true worth lies in their character, not in their clothes or wealth.
