Dear Gospel Music Artist/Minister/Creative/Manager/Director,

The Holy Spirit is the Proprietor and sole intellectual property Owner of the original sounds we release, just as He owns us (Col 3:16, Rom 14:8). We were created to look like God. We are His intellectual property (Gen 1:26). If truly, you know, believe and admit that “your” songs were inspired by God through the Holy Spirit and/or His word (Bible), then this will not be too hard for you to understand. If you own and cultivate a piece of land/garden, the fruits/harvest is also yours. The Holy Spirit works in and through us to produce fruits/results to the will and pleasure of God (Phil 2:13). Those results are His, not yours. That is why we give glory to God, and not ourselves (Romans 11:36, Psalms 115:1, Rev 4:11).

Think on Mark 12:17, Matthew 22:21 “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and God what is God’s.” The first and potentially, the most important thing to note here is that there are things that belong to Caesar (a representation of the world’s systems) and there are things that belong to God (Kingdom systems). So you must first identify and seek to know what things (skills, talent, gift, resources..) in your possession/capacity or within your access, that belong to God strictly for ministry and others that are transactional in the world. God placed man in the garden with access to everything but still instructed him to not eat from one. You do not eat everything that is within your reach. The second thing to note is that these two systems co-exist but do not mix.

However, as Christian humans, we find ourselves naturally and divinely placed to operate productively within these systems, for a purpose. According to 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, Paul made it clear that our actions (sometimes with great sacrifice) within the systems of this world must prioritize and encourage the ultimate Kingdom purpose – spreading the gospel and salvation of souls, before anything else. Our role is to operate within these systems, not mix them up. You won’t have to worry about finding a balance if there was no mix in the first place. Remember, you cannot serve God and mammon (Matthew 6:24). A tree cannot bear good and bad fruits (Luke 6:43). A fountain cannot send forth hot and cold water (James 3:11). The things of God simply do not and will not mix with the things of the world, irrespective of human logic, sentiments, bias or level of understanding.

The fact that God blesses you with money during ministry, does not make ministry a transactional platform for money. A productive earthly business makes money. A productive kingdom business (ministry) wins SOULS to God (whether it comes with money or not). Every time a soul is won, you have done ministry. Every time money is gained, you have done business. Souls and money at the same time? Check your focus. Our priority and focus is the Kingdom (Matt 6:33). If you’ve sought the Kingdom first, you won’t need to seek anything else. To meet financial needs, it’s okay for Christian music creatives to have other professional work, business or skill they can legally transact for money. It could potentially curb the crave to do ministry for money, while providing a means to do the same. (2 Thes 3:10)

With all sense of honour, nobility, integrity, transparency, responsibility, accountability, and genuine love, it is very important for everyone to abide by the applicable law(s) and mutual agreement(s), so that we do not dishonour God (Rom 2:23-24). Giving to Caesar what is Caesar, let everyone get all that is rightfully due them. However, a Christian must also be discerning enough to know when God might specifically require them to act/approach differently while executing the ministry into which He called them into and equipped them for (Isa 55:8, Acts 1:24-25). God uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise (1 Cor 1:27). Whatever your role is, NOTHING should be too much to let go for the purpose of the Kingdom (Luke 14:33). In the words of Fanny J. Crosby (1879) “Take the world and give me Jesus!”.

May God give us understanding and His Spirit guide us to purpose.

In the next letter,

“Should you give/accept/demand honourarium when invited to minister at a Christian gathering? Should you pay or not pay your church musicians?”.
Selah.

With love,
Gracious Hearts Music
