Yesterday's Long Life Prayer ceremony hit different.
𝐍𝐠𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐥, who was imprisoned for 11 years starting when she was just 13, stood up and read a 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐓𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐓𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐭.
They talked about how 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 has become under Chinese Communist Party rule. Teachers sneaking lessons in Tibetan. Kids named Tenzin banned from taking exams.
𝙿𝚎𝚘𝚙𝚕𝚎 𝚌𝚛𝚢𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚢 𝚗𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝.
And then the plea:
𝓟𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓮 𝓬𝓸𝓶𝓮 𝓱𝓸𝓶𝓮. 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓢𝓷𝓸𝔀 𝓛𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓯𝓮𝓮𝓵𝓼 𝓮𝓶𝓹𝓽𝔂 𝔀𝓲𝓽𝓱𝓸𝓾𝓽 𝔂𝓸𝓾.
That's the message they wanted His Holiness to hear.

This is rare in the Tibetan diaspora, where most businesses use English or the local language to adapt to their host countries.
Since the image was shared on Facebook by "Love Tibet," Tibetan netizens have flooded the comments with questions like Where is this place?
Many are praising it as a meaningful example of language preservation.

On February 18, 2026 (Tibetan New Year), Shugsep Nunnery in Dharamsala will make HISTORY.
For the first time ever, 𝟏𝟗 𝐧𝐮𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐊𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐦𝐨𝐬, the highest scholarly title for female monastics in the Nyingma tradition.
Each of these women completed 𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬, then served their community for at least four more years through teaching, administration, and guiding younger nuns.
Many of them are refugees who escaped Tibet with nothing, unable to read or write, carrying trauma from prisons and beatings.
Here's why this matters:
Traditionally, 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 received this title because full ordination for women didn't exist in Tibet.
𝚃𝚑𝚊𝚝'𝚜 𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚒𝚗𝚐.
Tibetan Buddhist leaders created a new path, opening doors for nuns to receive equal recognition as scholars and spiritual leaders.
These 19 Khenmos will now teach advanced studies, lead the nunnery, represent their community at major gatherings, and inspire the next generation.
This is what progress looks like.
