Vaginal discharge is something every woman experiences, and it’s usually a normal part of how the body keeps itself clean and healthy. But the color doesn’t always stay the same. Sometimes it’s clear, sometimes white, other times it turns yellow, brown, or even a light pink. These changes can be confusing, but they all happen for a reason.
The most common cause is hormones. Your menstrual cycle affects your discharge every week. Around ovulation it becomes clear and stretchy. Before your period it can look white and creamy. After your period you may notice light brown discharge as your body clears out old blood.
Changes in color can also happen when there’s an infection. A thick yellow or green discharge with a smell might be a sign of a bacterial or yeast infection. Pink discharge can happen after sex or spotting. Brown discharge can show up when the period is late or when the uterus is clearing leftover blood.
Sometimes lifestyle factors play a role too. Stress, new soap, tight underwear, poor hygiene, or taking antibiotics can all shift the color and texture.
Your discharge is simply your body talking to you. It changes based on your cycle, your health, your hygiene, and your hormones. Paying attention to it helps you understand what’s normal and what needs a little more care.
