Many newcomers come to Canada with strong qualifications, rich experience, and undeniable work ethic, yet still struggle to land jobs. One of the biggest hurdles? The interview process!

Here are some common challenges, and tips to overcome them:

1. Unfamiliar Interview Formats

Panel interviews, behavioural interviews, case interviews — all can feel overwhelming.

✅ Tip: Research Canadian interview formats. Practice STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) responses and consider mock interviews with local mentors or employment agencies.

2. Communication Nuances

It's not just what you say, but how you say it. Accents aren’t a problem but unclear messaging, rambling answers, or lack of confidence can be.

✅ Tip: Practice concise, structured responses. Record yourself. Ask for feedback.

3. Lack of "Canadian Experience"

This coded phrase often hides bias or uncertainty about your ability to adapt.

✅ Tip: Draw parallels. Show how your global experience solves Canadian problems. Volunteering or contract roles can also help bridge the gap.

4. Underselling Yourself

Many newcomers downplay their achievements or use unfamiliar terminology.

✅ Tip: Translate your experience. Use industry-recognized keywords and metrics. Show your impact.

5. Not Asking Questions at the End

This can be seen as lack of interest or confidence.

✅ Tip: Prepare thoughtful questions that reflect your research, curiosity, and desire to contribute.

Bottom Line:

You are not lacking value, you just need to package your brilliance in a way that resonates with the Canadian market.

Are you a newcomer who has faced interview challenges? What helped you overcome them? Let’s share, support, and grow together.

Newcomers to Canada, let’s talk job search success!

If you're sending out resumes and not getting interviews, something is off, and it’s often more than just formatting. After reviewing close to thousand resumes, I can tell you this for a fact!

Yes, you must align your resume to the Canadian style, but that’s just the beginning. Do these in addition:

✅ Use the right language: not just grammatically, but in terms that speak to:
• Canadian recruiters
• Your specific industry or profession
• The key skills and achievements employers are looking for

Adapt your resume language to match Canadian terminology and the keywords used in your field. Tailor your application to the job posting.

✅ Show results, not just responsibilities. Employers want to see the impact you made:
• What did you improve?
• How did you help your team or company grow?
• What value did you bring?

Don’t just say what you did, show how it made a difference. Use numbers, metrics, or outcomes to show the impact you had.

✅ Focus on transferable skills
Even if your experience is from another country or industry, identify skills that apply across sectors- leadership, problem-solving, communication, etc. Ensure they align to the job requirement.

✅ Match your experience to the job
One-size-fits-all resumes rarely work here in Canada. Customize each resume to reflect the specific job requirements and show you're a strong fit.

✅ Keep it concise and professional
Stick to 1–2 pages, avoid photos, and use a clean, easy-to-read format. Canadian employers value clarity, professionalism, and relevance.

If you’re not getting callbacks, it’s time to revisit your resume. Which of these do you need to add to your resume?

Need help creating a resume that lands interviews and opens doors?

Send me a DM! Let’s work together to help you show up stronger and get hired faster.

🚫 Things NOT to Say at Networking Events (and What to Say Instead) 💬
#2 is a complete NO-NO!

I often hear people express their frustrations and difficulty with networking. Be rest assured, I have had the same frustrations in time past until I started paying attention to the networking culture, contexts and nuances.

Truth be told, networking can open doors — but sometimes, the way we start the conversation can unintentionally close them. So today, I want to share a few common missteps and how to turn them into genuine, meaningful connections.

Save the slides for use as needed (print and cut them as prompters for your next networking event). And when in doubt of how to start conversations, try these openers:

1. What’s something exciting you’re working on right now?

2. How did you get started in your career journey?

3. What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your role?

4. What do you enjoy most about what you do?

5. Have you attended this event before? What’s been your experience?

📢 What’s the best conversation starter you’ve heard at a networking event? Drop it below — let’s help each other get better at this!

Which of these will you be using?

Weekends are a great time for resume refresh. A strong resume writing framework should follow this formula for each bullet point:
[Action Verb] + [Task] + [Quantifiable Outcome/Impact]

This ensures that every bullet is clear, impactful, and results-driven. Here’s how to apply it:

1. Start with a strong action verb (Led, Implemented, Streamlined, Optimized, Spearheaded, Analyzed, etc.).
2. Describe the task or responsibility (What did you do?).
3. Include a measurable impact or result (How did it improve efficiency, revenue, customer satisfaction, etc.?).

Examples:

⛔ Weak: Handled customer complaints.
✅ Strong: Resolved 95% of customer complaints within 24 hours, improving customer satisfaction by 30%.

⛔ Weak: Managed social media pages.
✅ Strong: Developed and executed a content strategy that increased engagement by 50% and grew followers by 10K in 6 months.

⛔ Weak: Organized events.
✅ Strong: Coordinated 5+ networking events for over 500 attendees, leading to a 20% increase in member participation.

This approach makes your resume stand out and demonstrates your value to employers.

Hope this helps someone! Remember, the best time to look for a job is when you don't need one! And updating your resume regularly ensures you are prepared and see how you measure up against the market regularly.

Advanced and Fulfilled Coaching

There was a question that came in on one of our videos on @advancedandfulfilled #YouTube. I thought it was a great question, so I want to share more detailed response to that question here.

Q: What if the role requires more technical skills than what I have, can I still negotiate?

A: Yes, you can still negotiate compensation even if you don't meet 100% of the technical skills required. Here’s how to approach it strategically:

1. Highlight Your Transferable Skills & Strengths:
If you lack some technical skills, emphasize your strengths in related areas. For example, if you're proficient in financial reporting but lack experience with a specific software, stress your ability to learn quickly and your expertise in similar tools.

2. Leverage Your Other Qualifications:
If you bring strong industry experience, problem-solving abilities, or a proven track record in financial analysis, use that as leverage. Or if there are other certifications & education: For example, if you're pursuing your CPA, mention how it adds value even if you’re still in progress.

3. Research Salary Ranges:
Understand what the market pays for this role using platforms like @Glassdoor, @Payscale, or @LinkedInsalary. Factor in your experience (length and depth) and location to set realistic expectations.

4. Focus on Value, Not Just Skills:
If you’ve driven measurable results (e.g., developed a new product, improved reconciliation accuracy by 30% or reduced reporting cycle time by 15%), showcase how your contributions justify a competitive salary.

5. Express Willingness to Grow:
If there's a skills gap, express enthusiasm for upskilling and ask about employer-supported training opportunities. Some companies may offer mentorship or learning resources as part of the package.

6. Negotiate Beyond Base Salary:
If the salary offer is firm, consider negotiating for benefits like:
- Signing bonus
- Performance-based raises/reviews
- Professional development reimbursement
- Flexible work arrangements

Hope this helps someone. Be sure to repost so others can benefit from this as well.
