After Polls in 121 Constituencies, Bihar’s Migrant Labourers Resume Their Journey of Uncertainty

As polling concludes in 121 constituencies across Bihar in the first phase of the Assembly elections, the sound of campaign slogans has faded into silence. The microphones have been packed away, the flags folded, and the roads that echoed with political rallies now stand quiet. But on the railway platforms of Patna, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, and Samastipur, a different kind of movement has begun — the homeward journey of Bihar’s migrant workers, back to Delhi, Punjab, Gujarat, and Maharashtra in search of livelihood.

These are the same men and women whose stories were narrated with emotion during the election speeches — the same migrant labourers promised dignity, opportunity, and jobs in their homeland. Yet, as trains pull out of the stations packed beyond capacity, their faces tell the truth that slogans could not hide — the truth of unfulfilled promises and endless migration.

For decades, migration has remained Bihar’s unspoken tragedy. Every election revives hope, yet every season ends in despair. Political manifestos have promised everything — industries, start-ups, employment hubs — but the fields remain fallow and factories scarce. The youth of Bihar still look beyond the state’s borders for work and survival.

The question now is not who wins the election, but who will finally win the trust of Bihar’s migrants.

A long-term solution demands more than sympathy. It calls for a comprehensive employment strategy, promotion of agro-industries, skill development linked to real jobs, and inter-state labour protections. Only then can Bihar transform migration from compulsion into choice.

Until that day arrives, the story will remain the same — election after election, slogan after slogan, and the same overcrowded trains leaving Bihar’s stations under the dim glow of hope.

One Vote, One Future: Bihar’s Moment of Democratic Renewal

As Bihar heads to the polls this November, citizens must rise above the politics of identity and vote for integrity, accountability, and inclusive development.

The democratic character of Bihar will again be tested as the State prepares for its Assembly elections, scheduled in two phases on November 6 and 11, with counting on November 14. Over 7.4 crore registered electors hold the power to decide not only who governs the State, but also what kind of governance Bihar chooses for itself.
In a democracy, the ballot is not a ceremonial act. It is a moral and civic instrument — a mechanism through which ordinary citizens demand accountability and shape their collective destiny. Yet, Bihar’s voter turnout, hovering around 56 per cent in recent elections, suggests that this responsibility is still under-realised. Every absent voter weakens the voice of democracy; every informed voter strengthens it.

Beyond the arithmetic of caste and region


The story of Bihar’s politics has long been intertwined with caste affiliations, community loyalties and regional identities. These are not easily erased, nor should they be denied, but they cannot be the only determinants of democratic choice. When votes are cast primarily on social identity rather than on the performance or integrity of candidates, governance is the first casualty.
A new political culture must now take root — one that measures leadership not by lineage or caste coalition, but by competence and commitment. Citizens must ask hard questions: Who has improved infrastructure, education, and health? Who has ensured jobs for Bihar’s youth and checked corruption? Who has stood for transparency rather than personal or partisan gain?

The real test of governance

The challenges before Bihar are well-known: poor infrastructure, limited industrialisation, inadequate public health facilities, and widespread migration in search of work. The unemployment rate among the youth, estimated at around 9.9 per cent in 2023-24, reflects a structural problem that demands innovative policy, not political slogans.
Public institutions — from schools to hospitals to local governance bodies — require steady investment and professional management. These are the metrics by which voters must evaluate those who seek their mandate. Corruption, which continues to distort service delivery and development planning, can be curtailed only when the electorate makes integrity an essential qualification for office.


Development must drive democracy

The forthcoming polls offer an opportunity to re-centre Bihar’s politics around issues that truly matter: roads, jobs, clean water, sanitation, education and health care. Development and dignity are interlinked; no society can advance when its politics is trapped in the rhetoric of division.
This election is a test not just of parties and candidates, but of the civic maturity of voters. Choosing wisely means looking beyond short-term promises and identity-based appeals to the long-term interests of Bihar’s next generation.

The citizen’s responsibility

Democracy thrives only when citizens participate fully and thoughtfully. Voters must verify their enrolment, understand the manifestos of contesting parties, and weigh the track record of those who seek re-election. The right to vote is also a duty — to oneself, to one’s community, and to the generations that follow.
Importantly, civic engagement does not end with polling day. A vigilant electorate must hold its representatives accountable for the promises made, and insist on transparency and responsiveness throughout the tenure of government.

A call to rise above division

Bihar stands at a crossroads. It can continue down the well-worn path of caste-based mobilisation and fragmented politics, or it can choose the more demanding but transformative route of issue-based governance. The direction it takes will shape its social and economic landscape for decades.
Each vote cast with discernment strengthens democracy; each vote traded for narrow gain weakens it. As citizens, we owe it to ourselves and to Bihar’s children to vote for competence, honesty and vision. The real change begins not in Patna’s power corridors, but in the quiet moment when a citizen presses the button on the voting machine.

The power of one vote — used wisely — can indeed herald a new Bihar.

असम के प्रिय गायक, संगीतकार और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता ज़ुबीन गर्ग का निधन सिर्फ़ एक कलाकार की विदाई नहीं है, बल्कि असम की संस्कृति, चेतना और सामाजिक-राजनीतिक जीवन से एक युग का अंत है। उनके निधन के बाद उमड़ी लाखों लोगों की भीड़ इस बात का प्रमाण है कि ज़ुबीन सिर्फ़ एक लोकप्रिय कलाकार नहीं, बल्कि असम की आत्मा थे। उनकी विरासत संगीत से कहीं ज़्यादा गहरी थी।

संगीत से परे, एक जन नायक

ज़ुबीन गर्ग ने संगीत के माध्यम से लोगों के दिलों में जगह बनाई, लेकिन उनकी असली पहचान उनके निर्भीक और सामाजिक व्यक्तित्व में निहित थी। उन्होंने धर्म और भाषा की संकीर्ण सीमाओं से ऊपर उठकर लोगों को जोड़ने का काम किया। उनकी सबसे बड़ी शक्ति उनकी बेबाकी थी। जुबीन ने कभी भी सत्ता से लोहा लेने में संकोच नहीं किया। वे नागरिकता संशोधन कानून (CAA) जैसे विवादास्पद मुद्दों पर खुलकर बोले और उनका नारा, "मोई अहोमिया, मोर धर्मो अहो" (मैं असमिया हूँ, असम ही मेरा धर्म है), असम के लोगों के लिए आत्म-सम्मान और एकता का प्रतीक बन गया।

लोगों के दिलों पर राज करने वाले 'किंग'

जुबीन की लोकप्रियता का राज सिर्फ़ उनके गीतों में नहीं था, बल्कि उनके मानवीय स्वभाव में छिपा था। वह अपनी कमाई का एक बड़ा हिस्सा गरीबों और ज़रूरतमंदों पर खर्च कर देते थे। उन्होंने अपने घर को कोविड सेंटर में बदल दिया था, 15 बच्चों को गोद लिया और सामाजिक कार्यों जैसे नशा-विरोधी अभियानों और जानवरों के अधिकारों के लिए सक्रिय रूप से काम किया। यही वजह है कि सड़क किनारे के ठेले वाले से लेकर बड़े-बड़े बुद्धिजीवी तक, हर किसी के पास उनसे जुड़ी कोई न कोई व्यक्तिगत कहानी है।

बॉलीवुड में मिली अपार सफलता के बाद भी जुबीन का वापस असम लौट आना उनके व्यक्तित्व का एक अहम पहलू था। उन्होंने अपने एक साक्षात्कार में कहा था कि वे मुंबई की अराजकता में राजा की तरह नहीं रह सकते, जबकि असम में वे राजा की तरह जिएंगे और राजा की तरह ही मरेंगे। उनके निधन के बाद उमड़ी भीड़ ने साबित कर दिया कि असम के लोगों ने अपने इस बादशाह को निराश नहीं किया।

एक अमर विरासत

जुबीन गर्ग का निधन एक युग का अंत है, लेकिन उनकी विरासत हमेशा ज़िंदा रहेगी। उन्होंने अपने गीतों, साहस और प्रेम से जो मशाल जलाई है, वह असम को हमेशा सही राह दिखाती रहेगी। उनका जीवन यह संदेश देता है कि एक सच्चा कलाकार अपनी कला से परे जाकर समाज में कितना बड़ा बदलाव ला सकता है।
