It’s the destination, not the journey. I make travel videos; tell stories; visit movie locations; have fun traveling while I still can.
My name is Joe and I spent a long time not flying and not traveling. A few years ago I traveled to Asia on three business trips, endured those long flights and managed to have a great time in spite of the air travel. I decided to start a travel channel to tell stories of the places I saw and the things I did. I'm still not a fan of flying, but I do my best to put out of my mind the specter of a horrible, fiery, burned beyond recognition death and appreciate the places I get to see and visit.
So enjoy my videos, subscribe to the channel, tell your friends and join me on my travels.

At Incheon Airport in Korea I ran into a robot called Airstar who is supposed to help out passengers with directions or flight information. My results were not good. Airstar doesn't seem to pay attention to you and when it does, it doesn't give you the right information.

Some platforms claim that longer captions on videos leads to higher views. I'm skeptical, but here's a long description of Italian UNESCO sites courtesy of Chat GPT.
Italy is home to one of the highest concentrations of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world, reflecting its immense cultural, historical, and natural significance. From ancient ruins to Renaissance masterpieces and breathtaking landscapes, these sites collectively tell the story of human civilization across millennia.
One of the most iconic sites is the Historic Centre of Rome, which encompasses landmarks such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Pantheon. This area represents the heart of the ancient Roman Empire and later became central to the development of Western Christianity. Nearby, Vatican City—itself a UNESCO site—houses St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, adorned with Michelangelo’s famous frescoes.
Further north, the Historic Centre of Florence stands as a testament to the Renaissance, a period of profound cultural rebirth. Florence was home to artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, and its skyline is dominated by the Florence Cathedral, also known as the Duomo. The city’s architecture, art, and urban design had a lasting influence on Europe and beyond.
Another remarkable site is Venice and its Lagoon. Built on a network of canals, Venice is a unique urban achievement. Its historic center includes landmarks such as St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. The lagoon itself is an integral part of the site, illustrating the delicate balance between human habitation and nature. However, Venice faces ongoing threats from rising sea levels and mass tourism, making its preservation a global concern.
Italy’s UNESCO sites are not limited to cities. The Archaeological Areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata offer a vivid snapshot of ancient life frozen in time after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The preserved buildings, mosaics, and everyday objects provide invaluable insights into Roman society.
Equally fascinating is the Val d'Orcia in Tuscany, a cultural landscape characterized by rolling hills, vineyards, and medieval villages. This region exemplifies the harmonious interaction between humans and the environment, and its beauty has inspired countless artists and filmmakers.
In southern Italy, the Amalfi Coast is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, colorful villages, and Mediterranean vegetation. Towns like Positano and Amalfi cling to steep slopes overlooking the sea, creating one of the most picturesque coastal landscapes in the world.
Another extraordinary site is Sassi di Matera, located in the region of Basilicata. These ancient cave dwellings, carved into limestone rock, have been inhabited for thousands of years. Once considered a symbol of poverty, Matera has undergone significant restoration and is now celebrated for its historical and cultural value.
Italy also boasts remarkable examples of religious architecture, such as the Piazza del Duomo, Pisa, which includes the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. This complex of buildings represents a peak of medieval architecture and artistic achievement.
In the north, the Dolomites offer a stunning natural contrast to Italy’s cultural landmarks. Known for their dramatic peaks and unique geology, the Dolomites are a paradise for hikers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts.
Italy’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites are not only symbols of national pride but also of global importance. They reflect the country’s role as a crossroads of cultures, ideas, and artistic movements. However, many of these sites face challenges such as climate change, urbanization, and tourism pressure. Preservation efforts are essential to ensure that future generations can continue to experience and learn from these treasures.
In conclusion, UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Italy represent an unparalleled blend of history, art, and natural beauty. Whether exploring ancient ruins, admiring Renaissance masterpieces, or enjoying scenic landscapes, visitors encounter a living museum that spans thousands of years. Italy’s commitment to preserving these sites underscores their value not just for Italians, but for all of humanity.

Here's some info about the Forbidden City courtesy of AI.
The Forbidden City stands as one of the most iconic and well-preserved imperial palaces in the world. Located in the heart of Beijing, it served as the political and ceremonial center of Chinese power for nearly 500 years, from the early 15th century until the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of China’s rich cultural and historical legacy.
Construction of the Forbidden City began in 1406 during the reign of the Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty and was completed in 1420. The project required immense resources, involving over a million workers, including artisans, laborers, and craftsmen. Materials were transported from across China—massive timbers from the southwest, marble from quarries near Beijing, and specially made bricks that were fired for months to achieve exceptional durability. The scale and precision of the construction reflect the centralized power and organizational capability of imperial China.
The name “Forbidden City” derives from its restricted access. For centuries, entry was strictly controlled; only the emperor, his family, and select officials were permitted inside. Ordinary citizens could not even approach its walls without authorization. The palace complex is enclosed by a massive defensive wall and a wide moat, emphasizing both its physical and symbolic separation from the outside world.
Architecturally, the Forbidden City is a masterpiece of traditional Chinese design. It consists of nearly 1,000 buildings and over 8,000 rooms, all arranged along a strict north-south axis. This layout reflects principles of harmony and order rooted in Confucian philosophy. The complex is divided into two main sections: the Outer Court and the Inner Court. The Outer Court was used for ceremonial purposes, including imperial audiences and state rituals, while the Inner Court served as the private residence of the emperor and his household.
The most prominent structures in the Outer Court are the Three Great Halls: the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony, and the Hall of Preserving Harmony. Among these, the Hall of Supreme Harmony is the largest and most significant, where emperors held major ceremonies such as coronations and royal weddings. Elevated on a three-tiered marble terrace, it symbolizes the supreme authority of the emperor, who was regarded as the “Son of Heaven.”
In the Inner Court, life was more personal yet still governed by strict hierarchy and ritual. The emperor lived in the Palace of Heavenly Purity, while the empress resided in the Palace of Earthly Tranquility. Numerous concubines, attendants, and eunuchs inhabited other sections, forming a complex social structure within the palace walls. Despite its grandeur, life in the Forbidden City could be highly regulated and, at times, isolating.
Color and symbolism play a crucial role throughout the Forbidden City. Yellow glazed roof tiles dominate the skyline, as yellow was the imperial color representing supreme power and prosperity. Red walls symbolize good fortune and happiness. Decorative motifs such as dragons, phoenixes, and clouds further reinforce themes of authority, harmony, and divine connection. Even the number of rooms and architectural details were carefully chosen to reflect auspicious meanings.
The Forbidden City also witnessed significant historical events. It was the seat of power for 24 emperors across the Ming and Qing dynasties. However, by the late 19th and early 20th centuries, internal strife, foreign invasions, and political upheaval weakened imperial rule. In 1912, the last emperor, Puyi, abdicated the throne, marking the end of over two millennia of imperial governance in China. Although he was allowed to reside in part of the palace for several years afterward, the Forbidden City eventually transitioned into a public museum.
Today, the Forbidden City is officially known as the Palace Museum and attracts millions of visitors each year. It houses an extensive collection of Chinese art, including paintings, ceramics, jade, and historical artifacts. Ongoing preservation efforts aim to maintain the integrity of its wooden structures, many of which have survived fires, earthquakes, and centuries of wear.

Last summer we visited Cape Spear, Canada's easternmost point, to watch the sunrise. It was rough getting up early, but totally worth it once we were there. It's a beautiful place. We even saw some whales off the coast soon after sunrise. All in all, an amazing experience.

In the west end of Tokyo you will find Mount Takao, a mountain that is considered a sacred place where you will find a Buddhist temple as well as numerous hiking trails. It took me two hours, but I eventually made my way to the top of the mountain. It was a tough hike, but it was completely worth it. It's a beautiful place and I would highly recommend paying a visit.

We visited an Ikea in Italy. It was almost exactly the same thing except the signs are in Italian and the food they serve at their restaurant is pasta. But other than that, it's the exact same store, same merchandise and same rat maze you walk through.

Just a short walk from New Town in Edinburgh you will find the Water of Leith, a pretty little river that winds its way through the city. My son and I took a walk along the footpath beside the river when we visited a few years ago. It was a beautiful walk and the weather was perfect. In the video my son says he saw a duck. Apparently I filmed the duck, but did not see it. See if you can spot the duck on the water floating off screen at one point. We love the duck.

**This is an audio described version of Episode 7 with added narration for blind and low vision people.**
It’s Episode 7 of the Nervous Flyer Travel Show and I take my first trip to St. John’s; the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador.
It’s a beautiful part of the country, amazing scenery and friendly people and the weather during our trip was perfect. I shot some great footage.
We hiked to the top of Signal Hill, saw the sun come up over Cape Spear, Canada’s easternmost point, and went on a puffin and whale watching tour. We lucked out and saw quite a few whales on our tour. I visited a few TV locations and also got screeched in, the ceremony where you become an honourary Newfoundlander.
This episode turned out very well; I’m very proud of it; it’s the prettiest episode I’ve done so far. I’m feeling very grateful to be able to travel with my family and that I’m still healthy enough to drag myself up these hills. It’s a cliché, but be grateful for good health. I’m starting to deal with some vision loss, nothing major yet, but I’m on glaucoma watch and taking medicine to stave it off. The point is, do the things you enjoy, that give you a purpose. As a dear friend says, tomorrow is not promised. My goal is to keep making new episodes while I can so we’ll see what 2026 has in store.
Hope you enjoy the episode; like, share the video, subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already and spread the word. Thanks to everyone for their kind words and support.
**Just a quick note, if you’re able to view this video on a full size computer monitor or television, then do so. The details of the bird and whale watching segment are a lot better on a bigger screen.
