Whether you are visiting the park for a day trip or having an overnight stay, Tarangire has something special for everyone.
This Park is impressively splendid for its famous concentration of wild animals, especially the elephants, and it is also one of the finest birding destinations in East Africa.
Plant species such as acacia and baobab trees make up the vegetation of this park. Notable species such as Acacia tortilis, not to mention the occasional palm trees, beautify the park. Make your safari a once-in-a-lifetime experience by planning a trip to Tarangire, where you will be able to experience nature.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PARK

The river's name comes from the union of two words "Tara and Ngie" Tara in Mbugwe language means river but also snaking, while the word Ngire in Hadzabe language means warthog and actually many warthogs live here.
It covers an area of 2,850 square kilometers and it was gazetted in 1970.

GETTING THERE

By Air:
The park can be reached by flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport which is 46km from Arusha.
Chartered flights are also available from Arusha to Kuro Airstrip located inside the park.

By Road:
The park is 121 kms through a tarmac road from Arusha city to the main gate.

ATTRACTIONS

WILDLIFE:

Tarangire is noted as a safari destination for its large concentration of wildlife population. There are unimaginable herds of animals that are attracted to the the Tarangire river. Most notable animals are Elephants, Eland, Giraffe, Lions, Buffalo, Cheatah, Leopards and Zebras.
The park also gives you a chance to see Mongoose Colonies that are often hosted by abonded ant hill.
Endeavour to make this Park part of your safari in northern Tanzania.
The best place to see the gentle Giants in their natural habitat from the adorable calves all the way to the intimidating bulls. Come see them digging up the muddy river trying to access water.

BAOBAB TREE:

If only they could talk, the baobab trees certainly have no hurry !!!! and why should they be!! As they have all the time in the world!
They can live up to 3000 years and can grow trunks reaching more than 100 teet in circumference. They have spent quite sometime on the planet and seen a lot of history. So, if only they could talk, they would surely be interesting storytellers!

TARANGIRE RIVER:

The river is fed by seasonal sand rivers originating to the East and South-eastern parts of the park. It flows northward along the park and empties into Lake Burunge. Within the park, the river is linked to / with Silale, Gurusi and Larmakau swamps.
It is undoubtedly that Tarangire River with its associated permanent swamps serves as critical dry season water sources for thousands of migratory animals in dry seasons, thus offering a fantastic game drive experience.

BIRD LIFE:

Enjoy spotting a large batch of colourful and exclusive bird species.
Over 550 different species of which several are threatened or endemic are housed with terrestrial and aquatic environments, spread all over across the park.
Particularly rich bird life occurs in the open Acacia woodlands, in and along the wetlands and in the flood plain of Tarangire River. The park is therefore an amazing destination for bird lovers.
One wouldn't miss to see colourful and breeding species of birds such as African bishop, Secretary bird, Open - billed stork, Spoon bill and Crown Crane.

TOURISM ACTIVITIES

GAME DRIVE:

This is an adventure that entails viewing wildlife while in a car. Tarangire offers tourists an opportunity to explore Mammals such large herds of Elephants, Giraffes, fringe eared Oryx, Greater Kudu, Gazelles, Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Lions, Leopards, and Zebras.
Birds including Ostriches, Tiny Ashy Starling, Guinea fowls, Francolins.
Reptiles like Tree Climbing Pythons, Tortois.

WALKING SAFARIS:

This gives you a more learning experience about animals in the wilderness and a better way of spotting animals at a close range. It is mostly done in the morning and evenings and brings about a different scope and sense of adventure.

NIGHT GAME DRIVE

The bush is completely a different world at night. This is what makes night drives so special. Not only do night game drives allow you to see nocturnal animals but also are a fantastic way to see nocturnal predators such as leopards.
The smaller cats, genet and African wild cat not to mention the chance of seeing lion hunting. Night jars and other birds are also of interest.

The «Big Five»

The phrase «Big Five» game animals was coined by hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. The collection consists of the lion, the African elephant, the Cape buffalo, the leopard, and the rhinoceros. The members of the Big Five were chosen for the difficulty in hunting them and not their size. The «Big Five» are among the most dangerous animals.

Black rhinoceros or Rhino - (Diceros bicornis)

Black rhinoceros or Rhino - (Diceros bicornis) is a large, thick-skinned herbivore having one or two upright horns on.

Kifaru Mweusi

Kifaru Mweusi-Ni mkubwa kwa umbo mwenye shingo nene na pembe mbili kwenye paji la uso wake. Anakula majani na ni kati ya wanyama walio katika hatari ya kutoweka duniani.

The Lion - (Panthera leo)

The Lion - (Panthera leo) is a large carnivorous feline of Africa; the male lions has a heavy mane around the neck and shoulders.

SIMBA

SIMBA-Ni kati ya wanyama wakubwa walao nyama,anaitwa mfalme wa porini mwenye nguvu. Simba mkubwa dume ana nywele nyingi kuzunguka shingo na mabega yake.

The African elephant - (Loxodonta africana)

The African elephant - (Loxodonta africana) is a very large herbivore having thick, almost hairless skin, a long, flexible, prehensile trunk, upper incisors forming long curved tusks of ivory, and large, fan-shaped ears.

Tembo

Tembo-Ni myama mkubwa wa nchi kavu alae majani.Ngozi yake haina nywele na hutumia mkonga wake kunusa na kushika majani anapokula.Upande wa juu ana meno mawili marefu yaliyojitokeza nje ambayo hutumika kama silaha, kuvunja miti nk.

The African Buffalo or Cape buffalo - (Syncerus caffer)

The African Buffalo or Cape buffalo - (Syncerus caffer) is a large horned bovid. It is the most dangerous of the Big Five.

Nyati/Mbogo

Nyati/Mbogo-Ni mnyama alae majani mwenye pembe zilizojikunja na mwenye fuvu ngumu. Ni myama hatari mwenye uwezo wa kutumia pembe na kichwa chake kama silaha.

The Leopard - (Panthera pardus)

The Leopard - (Panthera pardus) Leopards are carnivores difficult to see due to their behavior and their nocturnal feeding habits.

Chui

Chui-Ni kati ya wanyama walao nyama na huwa vigumu kuonekana kwa sababu ya tabia yao ya pekee na usiku ambao hutumia kufanya shughuli zake za kujitafutia chakula n.k.
