The following information has been brought to my attention, it was written by someone at a swan rescue centre in the UK and I thought I would bring it here for debate:
"Many knowledgeable rescuers, sanctuary workers and vets are now saying that it is perfectly OK to feed waterbirds fresh bread. There are too many destructive posts and comments from armchair professionals or organisations that produce expensive food pellets who don't know their a*ses from their noses, so FFS people please take note of the following advice.
In the last 7 days I have rescued 5 cygnets that were hugely underweight for their age, OK, I'm not saying this is 100% down to non human interaction but I'm 99% sure it is..
There is no study, no professor of Swan science, sitting in a lab in NY state or swan land with any factual evidence that bread causes any medical issues with birds.
But here is a fact that 100% does happen, if you stop feeding those feather friends who are used to your treats when you visit, *THEY STARVE AND DIE*.
Always feed fresh, wholemeal if possible, but white is OK as part of a sustainable diet - when they stop nibbling take your leftovers home, don't dump it in the water or on the bank, it gets mouldy and that is when issues happen."
When it comes to feeding geese, ducks, swans and other waterbirds, do you believe:
