Desert Haven Animal Rescue
A little goes a long way!
When accidents happen or a dangerous desert animal like a rattlesnake or brown recluse spider mingles with our animals — we have to act quickly.
In 2024, we spent a grand total of $2520.06 for 13 unexpected medical events. With these cases our expenses ranged from $6 for a tube of triple antibiotic ointment to $200 for a dental to $300 to remove a mammary tumor.
Is your jaw dropping at these affordable prices!? Ours too.
You see, here in Sierra county, we don’t have to spend THOUSANDS on a single major medical visit like we would have to do in Las Cruces or Albuquerque. With access to Dr. Allred, our veterinary partner at the Arenas Valley Animal Clinic of Sierra County, a little goes a long way toward maintaining good health for our animals.
Look at all these adorable faces. Over the next ten days we’re going to share their scary predicaments, our swift actions, and their full recoveries. Here’s to having the necessary funds to act as quickly in 2025! To healthcare!

We need to raise $2500.00 by end of day on GIVING TUESDAY! Give what you can today and help us replenish our Unexpected Medical Expenses fund. Because, while the dangers of the desert aren’t going away, at Desert Haven, a little of your money goes a long way.

ADOPTED! 💛Andy, currently available for adoption!💛
Hi there! I'm Andy! I'm a small dog with a ridiculously big smile! I'm a happy-go-lucky fella. I have a lot of things I like and not much I don't so here are some things that make me happy:
*Toys! Toys are so fun to chase down and carry around. I hope my new home will have some soft plushie toys for me to play with.
*People! I love love love to snuggle up. When you sit down, I'm likely to climb right into your lap and get comfy. Petting feels so good and I just really like to be close to people and part of the action.
*Adventures! I am up for anything really! Let's go!
*Walks! I pull a little on the leash but I can learn to walk next to you. I’m only about 20 pounds soaking wet so I’m a pint sized cutie. Plus I'm smart too and I already know "sit" and will listen to you as you teach me. I'm a people-pleaser for sure.
*UGH. Speaking of people, I just lost my human. I was adopted over three years ago to a wonderful man who took good care of me and we were total and utter besties. He was elderly and I am so sad to say, he died. I actually was left for a few days confused until he was found deceased and ya if you're wondering if that was scary YES IT SURE WAS. So now I'm a little sad, a little stressed, and a lot homeless.
*Dogs. Other dogs are my Achilles heel. I didn’t get good and socialized with dogs when I was little so I grew up being sort of a bossy flossie with my fellow doggos. It’s not a part of me I’m particularly proud of and may be something I can work through but I think I’d be happiest being the only apple of my human’s eye.
To sum up, three years ago Desert Haven adopted me to my wonderful human and now I'm back at Desert Haven so they can find me another human to love me forever. Are you wondering how I can still be so upbeat and awesome even though I've lost so much? Well that happens to be who I am. A silver linings type of dog. So, time for me to be adopted into a family again. I am ready.
There you have it, folks. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Ha ha ha! I'm Andy, your new dog!
Love, Andy

❤️Lacy, currently available for adoption!❤️
Hello there, I'm Lacy! I have a couple questions to ask you. Have you been thinking about bringing a little pupper into your life? Dreaming of a sweet darling that loves to play with dogs? Hoping she is pint-sized? Interested in the Heeler variety of pup? Have the time to devote to helping a shy girl shine? If you answered YES to these questions, you are in for a real treat because I match perfectly with all those puppy hopes and dreams. Read on!
Please allow me to expand on each of those parts of me. I'm a sweet and sensitive little girl with a penchant for play! I love playing with dogs and I am an active romper-arounder in play groups. I love sticks, toys, horsing around, zoomies, and just plain being with my pup and dog friends. Sunny afternoon siestas with my sisters-from-a-different-mister and brothers-from-another-mother are downright dreamy.
Truth be told, I am utterly relaxed and happy with my dog buddies and, conversely, tentative around humans. I'm not sure if some mean person gave me a startle when I was littler or if being a little shy is just my temperament, but either way, at the moment this is who I am: Lacy, A Girl Who Makes You Work For Her Trust!
So, if you require a puppy who eagerly wants to be scooped up into your arms the first day we meet, and looks up at you with googly oogly eyes filled with love -- ask the volunteers about Major. That's exactly who he is and I admire him for it! (Side note: Major is my roommate here at Desert Haven, so you can meet us both when you come for a visit!)
But if you want a sweetheart of a puppy that will let you scoop her up and will be unsure about whether or not it is a good idea and will look up at you with "holy crap am I going to fall in love with you that scares the bejeebus out of me right now!" eyes -- let's keep this conversation going!
Girls like me, that take their sweet time and that develop deep bonds over time, become dogs made of gold. Plus, I am only five months old now! I'm just a baby so I fit easily in your arms. The most important thing to know is that I am always sweet. When I feel unsure, I just try to keep some space between us when I first meet a new person. Hotdog bits, yummy treats, and lots of patience -- those are things to have in your back pocket when you come to meet me.
So, to sum up, at the moment, I'm in need of a patient family that sees my sparkle. I have an adorable twinkle in my eye. I am very lovable and tender. I think it's super fun to learn from other dogs how to be the best puppy I can be! I am going to grow up to be something special! I feel my feelings lots. I'm growing in my confidence and the people caring for me here at Desert Haven tell me that they love watching me blossom. I'm like a pretty flower opening up before their eyes! Come see for yourself! Love, Lacy

ADOPTED!🐾Millie🐾
You know that bestie you've been dreaming about that will stick by you through thick and thin? That dream girl that becomes your ride or die? The dog of all dogs, the one that makes you so happy that you cannot wait to wake up every morning to her beautiful face smiling back at you?
Well, here I am! You have found me. My name is Millie ❤
I am two years old, a Collie mix, and I'm good with kids, cats, and dogs. The volunteers here at Desert Haven have known me a few weeks now and they are still trying to figure out my quirky quirk, the thing about me that needs to be shared with an adopter so they have the full picture, all the info, not just the great stuff. And they are coming up with nothing!
I am house-trained, happy, loving, engaged, and responsive. I walk nice on the leash, I've met kids in a gentle fashion, and I'm very pleasant to be around. I am a sweetie pie who checks off all the boxes and that's all there is to it!
I am ready! Take me home and love me forever! Love, Millie
We will schedule you an appointment to meet Miss Millie any day of the week by emailing DHanimalrescue@gmail.com. It will be our pleasure to introduce you to this beautiful young lady who has stolen the hearts of all who meet her.

❤️Twix, currently available for adoption!❤️
Hello there! I’m Twix! How are you doing? I’m pretty good! I’ve been doing some thinking lately and you know what I think I'd like to be? A camping, travel, and hiking buddy. That'd be swell. I am so smart (not to brag but I am) and learn so quickly that I bet I'll have this off leash 'with me' thing down pat in no time. I aim to please my people so being close by is important to me and what's closer than all of us inside a tent! And we'll have s'mores around the campfire and tell ghost stories. That sounds like a great life to me! Plus, I'm puppy perfection when I ride in the vehicle. I sit nice, watch out the window, and will have a grand time heading to places with my family.
So, I'd be a good travel dog, camping pup, and hiking friend. What else? Hmmm I'm also a fabulous play partner for another dog while I live at Desert Haven so I'm sure I can transfer that to another dog in my new home. I like to play play play then sleep sleep sleep. Then when we wake up let's play some more! I'd also do great as an only dog as long as my family commits to giving me exercise and playtimes so I can burn my puppy energy in productive ways. Tug, chasing balls, walks, etc will do!
I'm one year old right now and full of excitement and eagerness. I have big energy and like to have firm boundaries from my people. I'm one of those real good boys who make their family super proud and listen very well when I know what I'm supposed to do. I don't get upset when you boss me; I don't want to be in charge I'm just a pup!
I like to be outside and I love water too! I could be a swimming dog! I could be a walking companion because I hold the distinction of being the dog at Desert Haven that pulls the least. Yep, that's right, I enjoy walking alongside my people. Then when the volunteer dog walkers sit down I often will sit right on the bench too for some petsies and some snuggles.
I think what my family will enjoy about me the most is how much they love me, how often I make them smile, and how proud they will be of me. I am looking for a family that watches over me and guides me to be the best adult dog ever! And since I'm already one year old we better get started very soon! Is a goodest boy in your future? I'm here! It's me! ❤️Love, Twix
