The World Health Organization (WHO) recently published a comprehensive report on global salt consumption, emphasizing the critical need for countries to adopt mandatory salt reduction strategies. The report reveals that the global average salt intake is around 10.8 grams per day, more than double the WHO's recommended maximum of 5 grams per day. High salt consumption is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, which are responsible for millions of deaths annually .

The WHO report highlights that only 5% of member states have implemented two or more mandatory policies to reduce salt intake, while 73% have yet to fully implement any comprehensive sodium reduction policies.

The organization calls for immediate action to adopt its "Best Buy" interventions, which include reformulating foods to contain less salt, setting sodium content targets, implementing front-of-package labeling, and conducting public awareness campaigns .Reducing sodium intake is identified as one of the most cost-effective measures to improve public health, potentially preventing millions of deaths from heart attacks and strokes by 2030 . The WHO urges food manufacturers and governments to prioritize sodium reduction to combat the global burden of noncommunicable diseases.
