In Cantonese cuisine, soup is a huge part of the culture. We call it (tong) and it’s usually served before meals to “open the stomach”. Since soups are warm, they act as a primer to gently warm up the digestive system and prepare for heavier foods. This is rooted in Chinese medicine philosophy. The warm liquid eases the stomach which helps with better digestion and appetite 😊
Soup is also seen as a form of love ❤️ A way to express love and care for someone is to make sure they are nourished with comforting soup 🥰

Learning about different herbs and TCM health benefits has changed the way I see tea. It’s not only a drink for enjoyment but a source of nutrients with an element of self care ❤️
Here are more tid bits on osmanthus & tangerine peel’s health benefits in TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) ⚖️
🌼Dried Osmanthus (桂花, guì huā)
- Aids digestion, relieves bloating and stomach discomfort
- moves stagnant qi (“qi stagnation”) associated with irritability or a tight chest
🍊Aged Tangerine Peel (陈皮, chén pí) ~ the longer it’s aged, the better it is.
- Regulates qi and relieves qi stagnation in the stomach/spleen
- Eases bloating, poor appetite, nausea
